Assistant Coach for Competitive Swim Camp


Assistant Coaches for the Terrier Sports and Recreation Camp, Competitive Swim Group, must have a strong competitive swimming background and experience coaching or working with children. They will assist the Head Coach in creating swim workouts that encourage proper stroke technique and build swimmers’ endurance, and will aslo lead dry land workouts, stretching exercises, and discussions on topics relevant to competitive swimming and be responsible for filming campers and providing on-the-spot feedback. At the end of each session, all the coaches will work with the AV Specialist to create a video for each camper to take home. Assistant Coaches should feel comfortable managing a group of 18–30 kids and working as a team with the other coaching staff. The position reports to the Head Coach, Camp Aquatic Director, and Aquatics Manager. Assistant Coaches will be expected to meet prior to camp to plan a program outline for the summer.

An Assistant Coach must have current certifications for American Red Cross Lifeguard Training and First Aid, CPR and AED for the Professional Rescuer, and Water Safety Instructor or an equivalent coaching certification. The daily schedule will include four hours of coaching workouts and two hours of administrative and preparation work, Monday through Friday, roughly 9 am to 4 pm.

Assistant Director for Competitive Swim Camp


The Assistant Director for the Terrier Sports and Recreation Camp, Competitive Swim Group, will be responsible for reporting to the Aquatics Manager as well as the Camp Aquatics Director. He or she will be in charge of checking children in and out during the day, monitoring counselors, sticking to the daily schedule, and reporting to management staff. Another responsibility will be communicating with parents during the drop-off and pickup times about any problems or issues that occurred throughout the day. The AD should have the ability to problem solve, address issues between campers, recognize bullying, be sensitive to individual experiences, and be inclusive. He or she must be able to delegate tasks and offer solutions to counselors so they can address issues themselves. Applicants for this position must have experience working with large groups of children, preferably in a camp or classroom setting, and be highly organized. They must also have some swimming experience and be familiar with an aquatic environment.

The Assistant Director must be American Red Cross certified in First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer; Lifeguard Training, WSI, or coaching certification preferred. The AD position schedule is from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm, Monday through Friday, with an hour unpaid lunch break.

Audio Visual Specialist for Competitive Swim Camp


The Audio Visual Specialist for the Terrier Sports and Recreation Camp, Competitive Swim Group, should have a strong background in filming and editing videos. He or she will be required to film portions of our children’s camp and edit videos of the activities as well as underwater swimming footage. Applicants should have previous work or academic experience in video production and be comfortable working in a fast-paced, deadline-orientated environment. The AV Specialist must be comfortable taking direction from noneditors and working independently with little oversight. The camp will provide all materials and tools necessary for filming and editing. Students who have Work Study for the summer will be given preference. The position has a flexible schedule, but will require approximately 20 hours per week.

Camp Dock Lifeguard Supervisor


The Dock Lifeguard Supervisor will be responsible for making sure all lifeguards, counselors, and other camp staff enjoy and promote a safe atmosphere while sailing. The Dock Lifeguard Supervisor will report directly to the Camp Aquatics Director and Aquatics Management staff. It will be his or her responsibility to take charge in the event of an emergency and to communicate with the professional staff at FitRec about what is happening out on the river. They will be in charge of coordinating with the sailing staff about the daily schedule and determining the safety of conditions on the river. In the event that sailing is cancelled for the day, the Dock Lifeguard Supervisor will be responsible for helping organize extra games in the pool for the campers.

The Lifeguard Dock Supervisor must have current certifications for American Red Cross Lifeguard Training and First Aid, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, experience working in an open water environment, and have been on the BU Camp staff for at least one year.

Camp Lifeguards and Dock Lifeguards


Lifeguards for the Terrier Sports and Recreation Camp will be responsible for guarding group lessons, open swim at the pool, and children sailing on the Charles River. They are responsible for enforcing all rules and ensuring the safety of all campers and staff both at the pool and on the river. Lifeguards may also work during open swim times at the pool, and must feel comfortable responding to any emergencies that may arise. In order to be considered for employment, lifeguards must be American Red Cross certified in Lifeguard Training and First Aid, and in CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. Lifeguards on the river are not required to have waterfront guarding but should be comfortable in a boating atmosphere. The application process for this position will include a tryout for new staff.

Camp Swim Instructor


Swim Instructors for the Terrier Sports and Recreation Camp will be responsible for creating exciting and challenging lessons for children ages 5–13. Lesson groups range from 4 to 8 children and are based on the American Red Cross Learn to Swim Program levels 1–6. Lessons for the camp will be from 9 am to 12 pm, Monday through Friday, and again in the afternoon from 3:15 to 4 pm. Instructors must commit to the entirety of each session and are only allowed one absence during the session. They do not need to commit to both morning and afternoon sessions. Instructors should have at least one year of experience teaching lessons to children, especially for these age ranges.

Applicants must be American Red Cross certified as a Water Safety Instructor and in CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. In addition to teaching camp, instructors may also teach in our family recreation programs that take place in the afternoons, evenings, and on weekends. The application process for this position will include a tryout for new staff.

Counselor for Competitive Swim Camp


Counselors for the Terrier Sports and Recreation Camp, Competitive Swim Group, will be responsible for the daily activities of the campers. Counselors should have a competitive swimming background but do not need to be certified instructors or coaches. They should have experience working with children ages 9–13 and be comfortable supervising and directing a large group. Counselors will also be expected to lead activities such as court sports and other games, and to engage campers in discussions about their swimming and camp experiences. Counselors may be asked to assist during instructional swim times with filming or organizing campers during workouts. An interest in the education field or child development is a plus, but is not required.

Counselors must be American Red Cross certified in First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. Counselors will be expected to work from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm, Monday through Friday, with an hour unpaid break. There is a possibility of having a part-time schedule, but it would need to be discussed with the Camp Aquatic Director and Aquatics Manager prior to the start of camp.

Head Coach for Competitive Swim Camp


The Head Coach for the Terrier Sports and Recreation Camp, Competitive Swim Group, must have a very strong competitive swimming background and experience coaching children. He or she will be in charge of creating unique and challenging workouts and leading classroom sessions on topics related to competitive swimming, as well as running dry land exercise and stretching routines. The Head Coach should have a strong understanding of physical development and injury prevention practices and should strive to promote good sportsmanship throughout the program. The Head Coach will oversee two Assistant Coaches and should be comfortable delegating tasks and managing staff. They will also oversee filming the campers’ swims to provide on-the-spot feedback and direct the AV Specialist in creating a film for campers to take home at the end of camp. The Head Coach should feel comfortable managing a group of 18–30 kids, and will also plan a swim meet for parents to attend at the end of the session. He or she will also be expected to meet with the Camp Aquatics Director and Aquatics Manager prior to camp in order to create a program outline for the summer.

Fitness Attendant (Blackstone location)


Fitness Attendants provide customer service, oversee participants, monitor rule compliance, and maintain cleanliness and safety of the fitness facility and equipment at the BU Fitness Center serving the South End community near BU’s Medical Campus. Attendants will work closely with individual members of this close-knit community as they help them to reach their fitness goals. The position is at the Blackstone Community Center, accessible from the Charles River Campus by a roughly 25-minute BU shuttle ride. Applicants must be available to work weekdays between 1 pm and 8:30 pm and able to commit to a minimum of eight hours per week. Saturday shifts from 10 am to 3 pm are also available. Must be available to teach evenings from 3 to 8 pm, any class format will be considered. Compensation will be based on experience. The Marketing Communications Intern will assist with all aspects of marketing communication at FitRec, including but not limited to: social media contributions, research, newsletter writing, calendar postings, broadcast emails, collateral printing and distribution, and dissemination of promotional materials around campus and in the community. The Marketing Communications Intern will manage sponsorship fulfillment for national and local sponsors, and will also create and manage photos and video.

Excellent written and interpersonal skills required. Experience with video and photography (including editing) desirable. Must be able to work independently. Requires at least three years’ work experience with PR, advertising, or marketing.
