Graduate Assistantships
The Department of Physical Education, Recreation and Dance
offers various graduate assistantships available to students
enrolled in a graduate degree program at Boston University.
Assistantships are offered in Group Exercise, Dance,
Emergency Medical Response, Fitness and Sports Medicine. We
also have assistantships in administrative fields of recreation,
which include Marketing/Promotions, Membership and Special Programming.
As positions for the 2013-2014 academic year become available they will be posted below.

Membership
One Graduate Assistantship position available
Appointment period: September 1 – May 31, 2014
We are currently seeking a Graduate Assistant in Membership for the academic year to assist with managing member relations at the Fitness and Recreation Center.
The position includes a flexible schedule of 20 hours/week. The award consists of 8 credits of tuition remission per semester and a $10,000 stipend, paid over a nine-month period. The approximate scheduled hours for this position will be Monday – Thursday from 5 pm to 9 pm with the remaining four hours flexibly scheduled.
Assistantship Responsibilities:
- Assist the Manager and Assistant Manager of Marketing/Membership
- Act as a liaison between Membership and FitRec Front Desk Assistants
- Support Front Desk Assistants with membership related inquiries, concerns and questions
- Ensure that proper membership policies and procedures are followed
- Contribute to overall marketing of facility and programs
- Perform administrative functions related to membership cancellations, fitness reimbursement requests, marriage certificates and informed consents
- Resolve customer concerns by providing accurate information via email, phone, or in person.
- Create and distribute FitRec ID cards for new members
- Manage credit card declines.
- Assist in the creation, promotion and execution of member programs including open houses, open enrollments and orientation programs and new member promotions
- Ongoing management of the cancellation database which includes database entry, spreadsheet management and basic tables and graphs
- Maintain and update membership database
- Complete special projects as assigned
Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree from accredited college or university (Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Physical Education, Public Health, Education, or related field)
- Previous experience in customer service is required
- Experience with Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel is required. MS Access knowledge helpful
- Strong communication skills and ability to work with a variety of personality types
- Strong writing/editing skills and careful attention to details required
- Supervisory experience including training, assigning tasks, and follow-up is preferred
- Must be well organized and able to effectively manage a number of projects simultaneously
- Demonstrated ability to be self motivated, creative, detail and deadline oriented
- Positive Attitude is a must
- Must be accepted into a graduate degree program at Boston University
- Must be able to work late afternoon and evening shifts

Marketing/Promotions
One Graduate Assistantship position available
Appointment period: September 1 – May 31, 2014
We are currently seeking a Graduate Assistant in Marketing/Promotions for the academic year to assist the Membership and Marketing Manager with the advertising and publicity of department programs and facilities.
The position includes a flexible schedule of 20 hours/week. The award consists of 8 credits of tuition remission per semester and a $10,000 stipend, paid over a nine-month period.
Assistantship Responsibilities:
- Assist the Manager and Assistant Manager of Marketing/Membership
- Plan and strategize publicity campaigns.
- Create, design, supervise and produce publications (newsletter, fliers, posters, signs, html communications)
- Supervise tracking and distribution of publications.
- Contribute design elements and expertise to FitRec website. Enhance visual appeal of site.
- Improve public relations and image.
- Contribute to overall marketing of facility and programs.
- Other duties, as designed.
Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree from accredited college or university (Public Relations, Advertising, Journalism, Graphic Design, Computer Science, Marketing, or related field)
- Minimum of one year experience in graphic design, desktop publishing, and/or Web page development required.
- Previous coursework and work experience in design, public relations, advertising, marketing, writing, communication.
- Strong writing/editing skills and careful attention to details required.
- Supervisory experience including training, assigning tasks, and follow-up is preferred.
- A portfolio of creative work is required for the interview process.
- Working knowledge of InDesign, QuarkXPress, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and/or Macromedia Dreamweaver preferred.
- Must be extremely well organized and able to effectively manage a number of projects simultaneously. Demonstrated ability to be self motivated, creative, detail and deadline oriented.
- Must be accepted into a graduate degree program at Boston University.

Aquatics, Family Recreation & Operations
One Graduate Assistantship position available
Appointment period: September – May, 2014
Description:
The Department of Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance is currently seeking a Graduate Assistant in Aquatics for 2013-2014 academic year to assist the Manager of Aquatics with the management and execution of pool operations and aquatic programming at the Boston University Aquatic Center within the Fitness and Recreation Center.
Assistantship Responsibilities:
- Hire, train, supervise and schedule instructor staff
- Communicate, organize and schedule family recreation programming
- Supervise and evaluate children’s swim lessons
- Teach aquatics classes, including PE, Family Rec, and Non-Credit classes
- Assist with the creation and promotion of new classes and programs
- Assist with the oversight of the student management staff including the Head Lifeguards
- Assist the Manager of Aquatics with any other assigned duties
Graduate Assistant will be required to routinely work one weekend day to supervise programming. Other weekend hours and some evenings will also be required. A total of 20 hours weekly is required.
Minimum qualifications: Bachelors degree in any field. Current certification in American Red Cross Lifeguard Training and First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and Water Safety Instructor. Minimum three years of experience lifeguarding and swim instruction. Excellent customer service and communication skills required. Must be extremely well organized and able to effectively manage a number of projects simultaneously. Must be accepted into a graduate degree program at Boston University.
Preferred qualifications: Five years of lifeguarding and swim instructor experience, including work experience at indoor aquatic facilities. Two years experience in a supervisory role (e.g. head lifeguard, pool manager). Current certification as an American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor and Certified Pool Operator. Experience teaching adults as well as children. Experience supervising a college-age population. Experience using Meet Manager software.
The graduate assistantship is a nine-month appointment from September 2013– May, 2014. The stipend includes 8 credits tuition per semester and $10,000 stipend for the nine months.

Noncredit Programs Graduate Assistantship
One Graduate Assistantship position available
Appointment period: September 2 – May 16, 2014
Description:
The Department of Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance is currently seeking a Graduate Assistant in Noncredit Instructional Programs for the 2013-2014 academic year. This is a one-year renewable position. Preference will be given to candidates in two-year graduate programs.
The award consists of 8 credits of tuition remission per semester and a $10,000 stipend, paid over a nine-month period. The position requires a schedule of 20 hours/week, which lasts from September 2, 2013 to May 16, 2014 and one week of paid training the week prior to the assistantship start date. The schedule includes flexible hours during the week plus weekend morning shifts between 8am – noon on three weekends per semester.
Assistantship Responsibilities:
- Reconciliation of statistical reports
- Response to customer concerns and inquiries via email, phone, and in person
- Communication with noncredit instructors regarding scheduling and departmental policies
- Tracking of expenses and annual reports
- Training and supervision of office assistants
- Program registration
- Occasional participation in special programs such as open houses and offsite registration
- Completion of special projects as assigned
Qualifications:
- Must be accepted into a graduate degree program at Boston University
- Intermediate knowledge of Excel required
- Experience working with statistical reports
- Careful attention to detail required
- Supervisory experience preferred
