UV OR NOT UV

UV OR NOT UV

This week’s blog post brought to you by our friends at New England Eye.

Summer is coming and the sun will be shining.   Everyone understands the dangers of sunburn, but did you know that exposure to ultraviolet and high energy visible light (HEV) can affect your eyes?

While short term exposure to UV rays can cause dry eye, discomfort or excessive tearing, fortunately these are only temporary effects.  However, exposure over many years can be cumulative and much more harmful to your eyes, potentially leading to cataract, macular degeneration and/or damage to retinal tissue; the longer the exposure, the higher the risks.

Luckily the fix is simple and very cool; appropriately labeled sunglasses and certain contact lenses that have UV protection can reduce the amount of radiation that reaches the surface of the eye.   And don’t forget to protect the eyes of the little ones.  The damage they incur as children could result in complications as they reach adulthood and beyond.

Don’t forget to attend our workshop on April 5th at noon at FitRec and see some of the 2016 spring collection of sunglasses.
