Merit-Based Scholarships

At BU, we not only recognize excellence—we help high achievers realize their dreams through a variety of merit scholarships.

Most merit-based scholarships are awarded for academics, some for specific areas of study. But since not all accomplishments can be measured in grades and test scores, we also have awards for outstanding athletes, performers, artists, and leaders. All are renewable for four years of study when certain criteria are met.

For some scholarships, you must be nominated; for others, you need to apply. Still other recipients are selected directly from their academic records with no need for any additional submission.

Are you eligible?

To be considered for any scholarship, you must have been admitted to one of BU’s degree-granting schools or colleges. Except for Trustee Scholars and Presidential Scholars, you must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or eligible non-citizen.

Should you apply for need-based aid, too?

Although most merit-based scholarships don’t require it, we strongly encourage you to complete the applications for need-based aid if you think you may need financial assistance beyond a merit award. That way, whether or not you receive a merit-based scholarship, you’ll be considered for any aid for which you qualify.
