Income Verification for Incoming Applicants
Federal regulations and University policy require verification of information used to determine a student’s eligibility for financial aid.
If you are entering in September you will be asked in May, after U.S. federal taxes have been filed, to provide verification of your and your parents’ income by June 1. If you are entering in January, you will be asked to provide verification of your and your parents’ income by November 1. Carefully review all information about Your Aid & Your Bill and instructions on Getting Your Tentative Financial Aid Posted to Your Account by submitting your income verification documents to us via IDOC. The requested documentation will include:
- A complete copy of your U.S. federal income tax return*
- A complete copy of your parents’ U.S. federal income tax return*
- Copies of all of your parents’ W-2 forms
- Verification of any untaxed income
Boston University requires that you submit copies of your parents’ federal income tax returns even if you elect to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool when you complete the FAFSA.
If you and/or your parents do not and are not required to file with the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS), a student and/or parent Income Verification Form, with statement of non-filer status, will be required.
Please note the special BU policy regarding how your aid application will be processed if you and/or your parents have not yet filed their income tax return and have requested an extension of the tax filing deadline with the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
