Returning Students: Getting Your Financial Aid Posted to Your Account

Your BU Scholarship Assurance aid will be renewed and posted to your account after satisfactory academic progress is reviewed. The CSS Profile™ is not required for the renewal of BU Scholarship Assurance aid and neither is income verification.

If your FAFSA was selected for federal verification or if you are not a prior recipient of BU need-based scholarship aid, verification of family income and other information reported on your aid applications may be required.

Items needed to verify information you reported on your financial aid application are listed on the Student Link. Complete each of the requirements below ONLY if they are listed on the Student Link. Submit all documents directly to BU Financial Assistance:

Submit one of the following to verify your eligibility for BU scholarship/grant aid, even if you elected to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) when you completed your FAFSA:

  • Signed (even if e-filed) 2016 federal income tax returns, as submitted to the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS), including all schedules.
  • IRS Tax Transcript for 2016:
    • Go to www.irs.gov. Select “Get Your Tax Records” then “Get Transcript by Mail”. Enter taxpayer SSN, Date of Birth, Street Address, Zip Code, and click “Continue”. Select “Return Transcript” (not “Account Transcript”) and select “Tax Year” (i.e., 2016) and click “Continue”.
    • Or, call 1-800-908-9946 and follow the prompts.
    • Or, complete IRS Form 4506-T (Request for Transcript of Tax Return) and mail or fax it to the IRS as indicated on page 2 of Form 4506-T.
  • If you or your parents did not and were not required by the IRS to file a 2016 tax return, complete and submit an Income Verification Form.

  • Submit 2016 W-2 Forms for all sources of earned income.

Provide one of the following to verify your eligibility for federal financial aid:

  • Use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) when completing your FAFSA to import your income tax return data from the IRS into your FAFSA. If you already filed your FAFSA and did not elect to use the IRS DRT, return to your FAFSA and complete the IRS DRT now. BU will access this data via your FAFSA transmission to the University.
