President to Propose Climate Resilience Fund

David Nersessian of the School of Management attended the annual meeting of the Association of International Education Administrators (AIEA) between February 16 and 19. He also participated in the American Council on Education and AIEA Internationalization Collaborative Annual Meeting on February 15.

Renata Keller from the College of Arts & Sciences delivered a lecture on the Cold War in Mexico at the Library of Congress on February 20. She is a Kluge Fellow at the Library.

PRESIDENT TO PROPOSE CLIMATE RESILIENCE FUND

While visiting California farmers affected by a severe drought, President Barack Obama announced last week he intends to propose a Climate Resilience Fund as part of his annual budget. The President’s budget proposal, which is expected to be released in early March, would set aside approximately $1 billion to gather data on how changing weather patterns affect the U.S. population and to develop and implement climate adaptation measures, such as more resilient infrastructure. The Fund is the latest in a series of initiatives under the Administration’s Climate Action Plan, and Congress would need to approve the funding.

NIST RELEASES CYBERSECURITY FRAMEWORK

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) released a Framework for Improving Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity last week, the culmination of a year-long collaboration with private industry to develop a voluntary set of standards and guidance to manage cyber risks. The Framework is a key component of President Obama’s executive order last year to improve the nation’s cybersecurity network and defenses. NIST anticipates that the Framework will continue to evolve as the agency holds additional meetings with stakeholders and updates its guidance as needed.

NEW INSTITUTE OF MEDICINE PRESIDENT ANNOUNCED

The National Academy of Sciences announced Wednesday that Dr. Victor Dzau will be the next president of the Institute of Medicine (IOM). Dr. Dzau is currently the chancellor for health affairs at Duke University, and is known for his research that led to treatments for high blood pressure and congestive heart failure. Dzau is expected to begin his six-year term in July, replacing Dr. Harvey Fineberg, who has led the IOM for 12 years.
