When does the program commence?
The program began in January 2008 and will be accepting annual intakes thereafter.
How long is the program?
The program is four years.
Why is this program being started?
Districts are where people live, work and get sick. Whether
government, private, or a mix of the two, Lesotho needs more
well trained physicians who can, as part of a strong health
care team, meet the needs of the people living in the districts.
Where will the training sites be?
Clinical training will take place in Lesotho, primarily at
Motebang Hospital (Leribe), Maluti Adventist Hospital (Mapoteng)
and QE II (Maseru) and their associated health centres. Registrars
will have rotations at multiple sites for varying lengths
of time during the course of the program.
How many people will be accepted each
year?
The program will accept up to six registrars-in-training per
year
How will employment contracts be arranged?
Registrars will enjoy a multi-year contract with a 25% bonus that will be intermediate in total compensation between what currently in available in Lesotho and what is available in South Africa. The complete package for compensation of program registrars is currently under review. Registrars will be Grade J employees under contract of the Government of Lesotho. Housing or a housing allowance will be provided as well as several other benefits that are currently awaiting approval.
Who is eligible to apply?
1) Any Mosotho who has competed medical school and a one year
internship in South Africa. 2) Any Mosotho who has completed
medical school at an internationally recognized medical school
in any other country. 3) Physicians who are not Lesotho citizens
may apply, however, priority for acceptance is given to Lesotho
nationals. Non-nationals should be able to demonstrate a long-term
commitment to medical practice in Lesotho.
How will registrars be credentialed?
The program will be recognized by the Lesotho Medical Council
and the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare. Upon successful
completion a Boston credential will be awarded. In addition,
we are working with the National University of Lesotho (NUL)
and anticipate a degree will be awarded from NUL.
