John Wiecha, MD, MPH (Course Director)

Dr. Wiecha is the Director of Predoctoral Education and Direction of eLearining in the Department of Family Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine. He received his MD from the State University of New York at Stony Brook, and M.P.H from the University of Massachusetts. He completed residencies in Family Medicine and in Preventive Medicine at the University of Massachusetts.

Dr. Wiecha has received a number of awards and fellowships, including the American Cancer Society Cancer Control Career Development Fellowship, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Generalist Physician Faculty Scholars Award, and the University of Massachusetts Fellowship in Asian-American Studies. Dr. Wiecha has developed a number of distance education courses, including courses on diabetes, EBM, and communication skills, and is currently helping the World Health Organization develop a world-wide training program on antenatal care.

Elliot Sternthal, MD

Elliot Sternthal, MD, a graduate of McGill University Faculty of Medicine in Montreal, Canada, completed an endocrinology and metabolism fellowship at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, Worcester, MA. He is board certified in internal medicine and endocrinology and is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Endocrinology.

Dr. Sternthal was in private practice of endocrinology for 13 years before joining the Joslin Clinic as a senior physician in 1994. In addition to teaching responsibilities, Dr. Sternthal was fellowship coordinator at Joslin from 1994-1999. He was an instructor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and has participated in many continuing medical education programs. His areas of interest are the progression of prediabetes to type 2 diabetes, postprandial hyperglycemia, insulin resistance and the metabolic syndrome.

In July 2000, Dr. Sternthal joined the Section of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Nutrition at Boston Medical Center as Clinical Director of Diabetes Services. He is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine. His objective is maintaining an integrated approach to care of diabetic patients on the inpatient and outpatient services. He maintains a very busy clinical practice restricted to diabetes. He also is very committed to teaching medical students, residents, and fellows as well as continuing his involvement with continuing medical education programs and clinical research.
