Joanne Wilkinson, MD, MSc joined the department’s faculty in 2006. She is a graduate of Brown University (AB, ’90), Brown University Medical School (MD, ’95) and the Brown/Memorial Hospital family medicine residency (’98). She worked for 6 years in a variety of private practice settings in Rhode Island and was awarded the STFM Resident Teacher Award (’98), the Parke-Davis Teacher Development Award (’00) and the Preceptor of the Year Award (’01) from the Brown family medicine residency. From 2004 to 2006 she was an academic fellow at Boston University and received an MSc in Epidemiology from the BU School of Public Health.
Since joining the faculty, she has focused her research on the improvement of primary care quality indicators for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, specifically cancer screening. She has received funding from the American Cancer Society, the American Academy of Family Physicians, the National Cancer Institute and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). Her current projects are the development of an instrument to measure knowledge about cancer in people with intellectual disabilities, a feasibility study to educate women with intellectual disabilities about mammography, the organization of an annual conference to define a research agenda for primary care issues affecting people with intellectual disabilities, and a qualitative study focused on quality of life for stroke survivors with aphasia (in partnership with Tom Gilbert, MD, MPH, a retired faculty member from the department). She has a secondary appointment as Assistant Professor in the Department of Community Health Sciences at the BU School of Public Health.
