Annual Report 2008-2009

The Faculty Council Committee on Student Life met monthly this past year. I co-chair the Committee with Dean Kenneth Elmore. We spent most of our time discussing revision of the university’s policies implementing the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). In addition, we devised a new student leave policy.

As to FERPA, we finalized our recommendations for a new policy. The policy was subsequently adopted by the University Council. Previously, the University presumed that all undergraduate students were dependents of their parents or guardian. Thus, the University routinely disclosed to parents or guardians information regarding grades, disciplinary matters and other academic information about students. Under the new policy, the University will no longer disclose routine matters, such as grades or minor disciplinary matters. With a student’s consent, the University may disclose a change in a student’s residential or academic statute. The University retains the right to contact parents or guardians in the event of a medical emergency or if a student under twenty-one violates drug or alcohol laws or rules. This change puts us in line with our peer institutions.

We also recommended a new policy for student leaves. Under the policy, students must consult with Student Health Services (SHS) before obtaining a medical leave and would need SHS approval to return.

Respectfully submitted,
Robert Volk
