FM&P is responsible for maintaining and inspecting the 270 elevators, wheelchair lifts, escalators, and dumbwaiters on campus. Elevators are inspected by the Massachusetts Department of Public Safety on an annual basis. The University is especially sensitive to accessibility issues for those with disabilities. For more information about campus accessibility, please visit Disability Services.

Any problems or malfunctions should as soon as possible be reported to the Operations & Services Center at 617-353-2105 if you are on the Charles River Campus, or the Control Center at 617-638-4144 if you are on the Medical Campus. Often problems occur on an irregular or intermittent basis, and if symptoms are reported as soon as they occur—and each time they occur—more serious problems can be averted.

Do not overload an elevator

Care must be given not to overload elevators. Each elevator has a specific weight and passenger capacity that is posted in the elevator. If an elevator is overloaded it may well shut down between floors and trap you inside.

What to do if you get stuck in an elevator

If you get stuck in an elevator, push the alarm bell, and use the emergency phone (if there is one). These phones automatically ring at our Operations & Services Center if you are on the Charles River Campus, or Control Center if you are on the Medical Campus. If there isn’t an emergency phone, on your cell phone call the Operations & Services Center at 617-353-2105 if you are on the Charles River Campus, or Control Center at 617-638-4144 if you are on the Medical Campus. Give the answering supervisor as much information as possible, including the elevator’s location, and they will dispatch immediate assistance. Stay calm and wait for help to come to get the doors open.

If you find an elevator that is stuck on a floor or has a problem, but is still operating

Call the Operations & Services Center at 617-353-2105 if you are on the Charles River Campus, or Control Center at 617-638-4144 if you are on the Medical Campus and provide the elevator’s location and as complete a description of the problem as possible.

If you hear an elevator alarm ringing

Contact the Operations & Services Center at 617-353-2105 if you are on the Charles River Campus, or Control Center at 617-638-4144 if you are on the Medical Campus and provide the elevator’s location and as much information as possible. Let people in the elevator know that help has been called and tell them to remain calm.
