Featured Project: Walter Brown Arena
Although the BU Terriers men’s ice hockey team now competes at Agganis Arena, their legacy home, Walter Brown Arena, is still heavily used for BU women’s ice hockey, Suffolk University men’s ice hockey, Catholic Memorial High School ice hockey, BU club and intramural ice sports, and recreational skating.
In summer 2010, Construction Services implemented major facility upgrades including replacement of the ice-making equipment, the ice floor, dasher boards, and glass with a modern, energy efficient system. New dehumidification, improved ventilation, and new lighting systems will significantly improve the energy efficiency of the arena.
The Walter Brown Arena project includes many Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs) including high efficiency lighting, energy efficient compressors, variable frequency drives, demand-control ventilation, and gas desiccant dehumidification.
These conservation measures are estimated to:
- reduce annual electricity use by 1.6 million kilowatt hours (kWh)
- save $221,000 per year (at $0.138 per kWh), and
- qualify for up to $199,000 of NSTAR incentive rebates.
