Facilities Management & Planning works with the Institution Recycling Network (IRN) to ensure that universal waste is recycled according to state and federal regulations for proper disposal and protection of the  environment.

Material categorized as “universal waste” includes, but is not limited to, such items as:

  • Lamps
  • Ballasts from fluorescent lights
  • Batteries
  • Computer CPUs and monitors
  • Metals (aside from aluminum cans)
  • Microwaves
  • Large appliances

IRN maintains pick-up locations throughout campus, where area managers can accumulate universal waste for regular pick-ups. To arrange for pick-up of universal waste, contact your area manager.

Hazardous Waste

Environmental Health & Safety oversees the disposal of hazardous waste, including chemical, biological, and radioactive materials.

Surplus Furniture

IRN also recycles our surplus furniture. Between 2012 and 2014 IRN donated 540 tons of BU furniture to countries in need. To recycle surplus furniture, contact Mike Lyons at 617-353-4944 or milyons@bu.edu.
