Universal Waste

Facilities Management & Planning works with the Institutional Recycling Network (IRN) to ensure that universal waste is recycled according to state and federal regulations for proper disposal and protection of the  environment.

Material categorized as “universal waste” includes (but is not limited to) such items as:

  • Lamps
  • Ballasts from fluorescent lights
  • Batteries
  • Computer CPUs and monitors
  • Metals (aside from aluminum cans)
  • Microwaves
  • Large appliances

IRN maintains pick-up locations throughout campus, where Area Managers can accumulate universal waste for regular pick-ups. To arrange for pick-up of universal waste, contact your Area Manager.

Hazardous Waste

Environmental Health & Safety oversees the disposal of hazardous wastes, including chemical, biological and radioactive materials.

Surplus Furniture

IRN also recycles our surplus furniture. Between May 2008 and December 2009 IRN donated 511,527 tons of BU furniture to countries in need.  To recycle surplus furniture contact Bob O’Toole at 617-353-2117 or rotoole@bu.edu.
