Online Education
Established in 2001, Boston University offers several fully online degrees and certificates at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Developed by the Office of Distance Education in close partnership with Boston University faculty from a variety of disciplines, online programs are designed to maximize the capabilities of today’s technologies in order to engage the full learning potential of each student.
Typically seven weeks in length, Boston University online courses are presented in a format designed specifically for online delivery. The BU online experience includes:
Interactivity
Faculty members interact with students asynchronously using Blackboard Vista, a robust web based learning management system. Class content incorporates online lectures, simulations, videos, audio, interactive animations, discussion boards, and in some cases, scheduled live classroom sessions. Through the web interface, students submit regular assignments, including homework, projects and papers. Most courses also integrate secure online exams.
Robust Design
Each course is designed by a faculty member expert in the subject matter, in partnership with an instructional designer from the Office of Distance Education. Topics are introduced in a modulated format, and explored fully and concisely. Visual and aural aids are utilized where, and in the manner in which, they are most effective. Audio and animation help to create a more immediately engaging and effective learning environment than could be provided in a textbook. Care is exercised to match the right form of presentation with the specifics of the material. Technology is never employed for its own sake—but for how it can enhance a student’s understanding of the subject. Graphic representations can bring much needed clarity to abstract concepts, amplifying the accompanying text in a direct and powerful manner.
Community
The online classroom consists of a community of students, organized into small groups to form virtual classrooms. Expert facilitators are available to answer questions about subject material, coordinate class discussions, assist with assignments, and provide personalized support. Students are able to post ideas, converse, share opinions, and interact with classmates from around the world. In addition, several areas for non course related discussion, such as the Water Cooler, are available for students to interact.
Flexibility
The convenient, flexible format allows participants to study wherever there is access to the internet. Though curriculum requirements must be completed within an established time frame, each student determines the hours that are best for studying, attending lectures and completing assignments. Online course materials are available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, from any location with internet access.
Support
A vital component of all Boston University online programs is the availability of outstanding Student Services. Distance Education assures that online students receive prompt and attentive assistance throughout their learning experience, from application and registration to technical support, library access, and graduation details. The intent is to replicate the on campus experience for online students as much as possible.
