Martin J. Howard
Vice President for Financial Affairs & Treasurer
Martin J. Howard joined BU in 1983. Since that time he has played a key role in the planning and execution of more than $1 billion of capital project financings as part of the University’s strategic initiative to build a cohesive campus. In addition to his work in the University’s financial administration, he has served as an adjunct faculty member and Chairman of the Treasurers’ Club of Boston.
As Vice President for Financial Affairs & Treasurer, Howard directs the day-to-day financial management and review of a $1.8 billion operation with total assets approaching $4 billion. His office also helps to identify and secure funding for groundbreaking research in everything from the early detection of lung cancer to language acquisition.
Reporting Departments
- Financial AffairsFinancial Affairs supports the academic and research mission of the University through accurate recording of all financial transactions, and the safeguarding of financial assets of the University. The office is responsible for the preparation of the annual Financial Report and tax filings and provides timely financial information and analysis to other departments in support of the needs of the University. In addition, Financial Affairs is responsible for treasury management and capital financing needs of the institution.
- Internal AuditInternal audit delivers audit services through a program that includes compliance assessments and financial, operational, and information technology reviews and audits. These efforts provide assurance that good business practices and policies are adhered to, adequate internal controls are maintained, and assets are properly safeguarded
- Research AdministrationThe primary mission of Research Administration is to provide support to faculty as they seek funding for their research and to manage the results of that funding search as this research revenue flows to the University. As such, Research Administration is responsible for oversight of the compliance issues attached to the funding received as well as faculty adherence to University policies. Research Administration is fully acquainted with federal and private regulations and policies and provide advice, counsel, and training to faculty and staff.
