Please join us for a conversation on the emerging future in Europe with Portuguese poet Rosa Alice Branco and her translator Alexis Levitin. The event takes place as part of our ongoing European Voices series, and is organized in collaboration with the literary journal AGNI. The series is premised on the notion, beautifully articulated by Rebecca Solnit, that ideas originate “not in bureaucratic chambers, but in the ‘street’ where they are picked up and re-presented by artists, writers, activists, and intellectuals in a manner that sparks public discourse and seeds future politics.” It addresses questions at the intersection of European politics and culture.

Rosa Alice Branco is one of today’s premier Portuguese-language poets, with eleven collections of poems translated and published around the world, including Cattle of the Lord, translated by Alexis Levitin. The English translations of her work have been featured New European Poets and dozens of magazines and journals in the United States, including The New England Review, Prairie Schooner, and Words Without Borders. Branco has received the Espiral Maior Poetry Prize for Best Collection in Brazil, Portugal, Angola, and Galicia. Originally from Aviero, she now lives in Porto, where she is a Professor of the Theory of Perception at the city’s Institute of Art and Design.

Alexis Levitin, SUNY Distinguished Professor, translates works from Portugal, Brazil, and Ecuador. His many translated works include Clarice Lispector’s Soulstorm and Eugénio de Andrade’s Forbidden Words, both published by New Directions. He has given readings and lectures on translation at well over one hundred colleges and universities in the USA and around the world.

This year's European Voices events are organized in collaboration with the literary journal AGNI and the Goethe-Institut Boston and are taking place as part of EU Futures, a series of conversations exploring the emerging future in Europe. The EU Futures project is supported by a Getting to Know Europe Grant from the European Commission Delegation in Washington, DC to the Center for the Study of Europe at Boston University.
