Global Fridays Film Screening: Ajami (2009) by Scandar Copti & Yaron Shani

This year, the newly inaugurated Pardee School for Global Studies has begun a new film series initiative: “Global Fridays: Promoting Cultural Understanding Through Film.” Inspired by journalist E. Nina Rothe's article “Six Films That Could Save the World” and spearheaded by the Center for the Study of Europe, the fall 2014 series - “Stories from Israel and Palestine” is a collaboration between the Institute for the Study of Muslim Societies and Civilizations, Middle East and North African Studies, the Elie Wiesel Center for Judaic Studies, and the Department of Modern Languages and Comparative Literatures. Screenings take place at 3 PM on Fridays throughout the semester. Click link below for full list of films.

On Friday, November 21, we are Ajami, a tale of communal mistrust and social divisions - not only between Jews and Arabs but also between Christians and Muslims, rich and poor, farmers and city dwellers, men and women, young and old and so on - in Jaffa, written and directed by Scandar Copti, an Israeli Arab (who also plays an important supporting role), and Yaron Shani, who is Jewish.
