Legendary viola da gamba virtuoso Jordi Savall returns to Boston, along with musicians of Hespèrion XXI from Turkey, Israel, and Armenia, for a breathtaking musical exploration of intermingling cultural influences in 17th-century Istanbul. The famed city at the crossroads of Europe and Asia was home to a diverse population where Sephardic Jewish and Armenian traditions met with those of the Ottoman rulers, and music knew no bounds. The heart of the program is The Book of the Science of Music written by Moldavian diplomat and musician Dimitrie Cantemir, an extraordinary document exemplifying Baroque music in the Ottoman Empire.
