Since 1974, the Hilliard Ensemble has earned a reputation as one of the most accomplished and polished vocal chamber ensembles in the world. For this back-by-popular-demand performance, they perform some of their favorite pieces, both sacred and secular. The first half explores texts from the Canzoniere by Petrarch where he speaks of the folly of his remote, unrequited love for a woman, Laura, he met in his youth. The sacred works of the second half include three hymns of St. Godric, the earliest English pieces for which both words and music survive, liturgical music from Kiev and Armenia, and Pérotin’s groundbreaking Viderunt Omnes. Written around 1198, this is the earliest known work with four independent parts.
