Alumni News Archives

Take a minute to tell us and your fellow alumni what you are up to.

Mary Ellison (B.A., 2008)

I’m currently a master’s student at the University of New Orleans. I should be finished with my degree in May 2011 (at the latest!). I just gave a talk at GSA in Denver titled “Mainland Marsh Shoreline Response to Barrier Island Transgressive Submergence”. The session was actually co-chaired by Chris Hein and Zoe Hughes. GSA actually did a press release about my research. (11/09/10)

Drew Fetterman (B.A., 2007)

Professional life:
After a year of serving in AmeriCorps NCCC upon graduation, I took up teaching earth sciences to sixth graders at an outdoor school just outside of Portland, Oregon. This summer I snagged an SCA internship at Newberry National Volcanic Monument, where I am currently working as an interpretive park ranger. Living and working inside a volcano is not as bad as it sounds.

Personal news:
Having lived in Massachusetts, Washington D.C., Maryland, Louisiana, Maine, California, and Oregon since graduating, I must say I have developed a phobia to living in one place for longer than a few months at a time. Perhaps settling down (and getting started on a Master’s) is in my near future. Contact info: drewfetter@gmail.com. (7/21/09)

Sara Dougherty (B.A., 2006)

After leaving BU, I went on to earn a MS degree in Geophysics from Boston College in 2008. My thesis involved the development of a 3D seismic velocity model for the upper crust in central Alaska using data collected by the wonderful folks at Weston Geophysical (Lexington, MA). I am currently working towards a PhD in Geophysics at Caltech, with a focus on seismology. Please contact me at sarad@gps.caltech.edu. (6/02/09)

Christa Ziegler (Ph.D., 2007)

Professional life: I’m currently working as a Senior Petroleum Geologist for ExxonMobil in Houston, TX. Even though my degree is in Earth Sciences, I have applied my research and analytical skills to help find and develop some of the world’s largest oil and gas fields. So far, I’ve worked basins in US, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, and UAE, from the exploration to the production-scale. It has been exciting and very enjoyable.

Personal news: I also gave birth to a baby girl, Isabella, on March 31, 2008. She’s developing wonderfully. Before I know it, I’ll be paying BU’s crazy tuition bill!
