 Will a Writing Fellow visit my class and speak to my students? Yes. Call the ERC at 617-353-7077 to arrange for a classroom visit. The Writing Fellow will work with you to deliver a brief presentation that is tailored to your course and students. Do I have to be teaching an English or humanities course in order for the ERC Writing Center to help my students? No. Any BU student, in any academic course, may come to the Writing Center. Although most students we see at the Writing Center are taking humanities or other writing-intensive courses, we help students in all colleges of the University. Some colleges have their own writing centers, and the ERC Writing Center will work in cooperation with them if needed. What sort of student should I recommend make an appointment with the Writing Center? The ideal student should be self-motivated and eager to improve his or her own writing. Also, you and the student should have a clear and specific idea of what needs improvement in a given paper. Beyond that, we provide instruction in all phases of the writing process, from brainstorming to strategies for revision. However, the ERC Writing Center is not a proofreading or editing service. What sort of student should I not recommend make an appointment with the Writing Center? Students who only need to have their papers proofread or checked for grammar errors ought not be recommended. We focus on teaching and bolstering the fundamentals of writing rather than simply ‘fixing mistakes.’ We do, however, give instruction in grammar during our sessions to motivated students (particularly ESL/international students) who want to improve their English language skills. Will the ERC Writing Center provide me with documentation of my student’s visit? Although the details of a Writing Center visit are confidential, the Center will, upon student request, provide documentation of a visit. |
