Tutoring:  What’s in it for you?

It’s not just about sharing your knowledge and experience with other students.  It’s about making contacts with faculty and building your resume.  It’s about teaching others what you know, building your own skill set, and making money all at the same time.  Ultimately, it’s about preparing for your future.

You know the material and the concepts, but you’ll lose some of the information over time.  Tutoring will help you refine your knowledge and skills.  It also gives you new teaching skills without the obligation of grading papers or exams.  In short, you will come away with increased confidence, better study skills, and more in depth subject knowledge in whatever class you tutor.

In Need of Funds?

You’re busy and taking classes, it’s hard to find a job to fit your schedule.  With tutoring you only need to commit 4 hours a week and YOU decide when those hours are.  And did we mention the $9.50 an hour for individual tutoring or $11.50/hour for groups?

Want to build your resume?

The ERC requires a professor recommendation for each class you plan to tutor.  This means they’re going to have to know your name and consider your abilities, helping you to get some recognition for all of the hard work you’ve been doing in their class.  It’s that recognition that will forge a connection with your professor.  When it comes time for an assistantship, grad school, or a job, you’ll have a faculty member to contact for another recommendation.

Worried about not knowing how to tutor?  The ERC’s got you covered.  All tutors at the ERC are given free training in one-on-one peer tutoring and group tutoring.  At the end of this training you’ll be a certified College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) tutor.

So how do you apply?

Print out the application and faculty recommendation forms, fill them out, and return them to the ERC.  You’ll need only one application, but also a professor recommendation for each class you’d like to tutor in.  That’s it.  We’ll review your application and recommendation(s) and give you a call if we‘d like you to come in and interview.

You will need to have earned a grade of B or higher in any course that you tutor and a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. These are minimum requirements. Meeting these minimum requirements will not guarantee that you will be hired as a tutor.

Keep in mind that most tutors are hired in the first few weeks of each semester.  However, we encourage students to apply even after that time frame because we will accept and review applications on a rolling basis.
