About ERC Programs
ERC Mission:
The Educational Resource Center (ERC) helps Boston University students develop the range and depth of academic skills required by the University’s rigorous programs. We focus on promoting a disciplined approach to study, fostering active and independent learning, developing an awareness and understanding of one’s own thought process, and advocating the strategic use of resources available throughout the University.
The center serves as an academic referral, training, and information resource for the University community; including faculty, staff, administration, parents, alumni, and both undergraduate and graduate students.
ERC Services:
The ERC offers Peer Tutoring, Writing Assistance, Language Link conversation groups and Workshops. The ERC professional staff is also available to meet with students individually to develop a personalized plan for academic success and/or to assist them in developing specific skills. These services are free and can benefit all students who are interested in improving their academic performance.
Peer Tutoring:
The ERC’s Peer Tutoring Program assists students in developing strong study skills and an awareness of one’s own learning processes, therefore promoting independent learning. Peer Tutors offer guidance and support to students in their pursuit of academic achievement.
Peer Tutoring is offered in two formats, weekly appointments and single appointments, during both the summer term and the academic year.
Writing Assistance at the ERC:
Need help with the writing process? From concept to outline to finishing touches, our writing fellows can help you with writing concerns such as organization, documentation and style. Writing fellows are BU doctoral students who offer writing advice and troubleshooting strategies. Please note that we offer assistance and do not simply proofread or edit your work.
Language Link:
The ERC’s Language Link provides an opportunity for BU students, faculty, staff and alumni to enhance their foreign language skills in small, informal conversation groups led by native speakers. Students expand their knowledge of other cultures, increase vocabulary and improve their pronunciation as an added dimension to classroom learning. The goal is to have fun while increasing confidence and social interaction with others who want to practice foreign/second languages, whether related to coursework or study abroad. Groups are available in approximately 15 languages each semester. For more information about Language Link, click here.
Workshops:
The ERC workshops give students the opportunity to learn how to become more academically successful. Students are encouraged to attend each workshop in the series because each workshop has been created to build and develop a series of specific skills. During the academic year, workshops are offered in both Academic Study Skills as well as ESL Grammar Workshops. For more information about the ERC’s Workshop series, click here.
Individual Appointments:
ERC professional staff members are qualified to meet with students individually. These meetings assist students to develop a personalized plan for their academic success and usually focus on time management, organization and study skills. To schedule an appointment with staff, please call the Front Desk at 617-353-7077 or e-mail us at erc@bu.edu.
