Peer Tutoring Mission
The Peer Tutoring Program offered through the ERC at Boston University assists students in developing strong study skills and an awareness of their own learning processes, thereby promoting independent learning. Peer Tutors offer guidance and support to students in their pursuit of academic achievement.
Position Requirements
In order to apply to be a Peer Tutor, you must be an undergraduate student in good academic, disciplinary, and financial standing at Boston University, as verified by the ERC. You need to have a cumulative GPA at BU of 3.0 or higher, as well as achieving a grade of B+ or better in whichever course(s) you wish to tutor.
Candidates must also:
- Be available to attend the all day training on Saturday, September 7th, 2024 (in-person)
- Be available to tutor at least four hours every week.
- Commit at least two consecutive semesters to the position.
Are you looking for any particular courses?
Applications are being accepted for a range of courses, including but not limited to the following: BI107, BI203, CH101/102, CH203/204, MA113/115/116, MA121/122, MA123/124, PY105/106, EC101/102/201/202/203/204.
*Please note that we do not offer tutoring in WR courses. Please contact the Writing Program at CAS if you are interested in becoming a writing tutor.
I know that I won't be available on the required training date for this semester; can I still apply?
All potential tutors must be available for training on the date specified by that semester’s application. If you know that you’re not able to commit to this date, please wait to apply in a future semester.
I’m only going to be able to tutor this semester; should I still apply?
We are looking for students who can commit at least two consecutive semesters to the position. If you think that there is a good chance you can’t make this commitment, we would prefer it if you did not apply until you are able to meet this preference.
When do you start accepting applications?
We generally open the Fall semester application around April and the Spring semester application around October. Please check back on our web page around that time. Please note that we don’t have application deadlines. The application is open until positions are filled and positions are filled based on hiring needs.
Can I apply to tutor a course I'm currently taking?
Please wait until you have received your final grade for a course you’d like to tutor.
I am just a little below the 3.0 GPA requirement; can I still apply?
We’re sorry, but you must have a 3.0 or higher to apply, even if you’re at a 2.9. Keep improving and think about applying as soon as you reach the 3.0. If you need some help making those adjustments, we welcome you to use the resources at the ERC!
I received a 5 on my AP ___ exam. Does that qualify me to tutor the course at BU?
A score of 5, while commendable, does not meet the requirements of the Peer Tutoring Program. We cannot accept this as an equivalent to taking the course at BU.
I am a first-semester first-year student; am I eligible to be a tutor?
If it’s your first semester at BU, you aren’t eligible for a position. We require that you complete at least one semester at BU before we can consider your application. Take this first semester to build a strong foundation at BU and then consider applying next semester.
Do tutors get paid?
Yes, this is a paid opportunity.
I am a graduating senior (this is my last semester at BU); am I eligible to be a tutor?
If you have only 1 semester left at BU, you would not be able to commit to our 2 consecutive semester requirement and therefore aren’t eligible to apply.
I’m a grad student; can I still apply?
Unfortunately, we do we do not typically hire graduate students for this position. The Peer Tutoring Program at the ERC is a peer-based program; therefore, we prefer to hire undergraduates who have not only recently completed the courses they wish to tutor in, but have also taken these courses at BU. We review graduate student applications on a case-by-case basis.
I’m an international exchange student; can I still apply?
We require that you complete at least one semester at BU before we can consider your application. If it’s your first semester at BU, you aren’t eligible for a position. Additionally, we expect our tutors to work for two consecutive semesters. An exchange student attending BU for one semester or one year would not meet our requirements.
