Under the direction of Mark Miller, the All-Campus Orchestra is a large ensemble devoted to the study and performance of orchestral music. Literature is selected from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Modern periods. Recent performances have included compositions by Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Corigliano, Mussorgsky, Brahms, and Dvorak.
Students learn bowing, articulation, and breathing techniques, tuning procedures, acoustics, rhythm and meter, phrasing, and ensemble principles. Students also explore why each work was created and what makes it worthy of performance.
String placement auditions are held during the first week of the Fall semester. Limited wind and percussion chairs are filled by audition, held in conjunction with the BU Concert Band auditions during the first week of the Fall semester and on an as-needed basis for the Spring semester.
The orchestra rehearses Tuesday and Thursday nights from 7:00 – 9:00pm and performs two formal concerts each semester.
