The Major in English

The major concentration in English includes a core sequence which provides students with the tools of criticism and with a foundation in the study of British Literature.

The remaining courses needed to complete the concentration may be selected to reflect and integrate the individual interests of each student. Students must include at least one course in American Literature before 1900 (EN 471, EN 479, EN 533, EN 534, EN 545, EN 571, EN 579, or courses designated as equivalent in any year). In addition, at least one course in Concepts and Methods of Literary Study is required (any literature course listed from EN 404 through 490 or EN 493 through 498).
