Writing and Revising the History of Capitalism
- Starts: 5:00 pm on Thursday, October 25, 2018
- Ends: 8:00 pm on Thursday, October 25, 2018
This talk, the first in the "Writing in the Field" Lecture Series hosted by the CAS Writing Program, explores the composing and revision processes of historical writing. What makes for effective and compelling historical writing? What are the methods, for example, of introducing central actors in a historical episode? How does a writer of history not only tell a story, but also build an argument about an abstract concept, like capitalism? Using the examples of professional readers’ and reviewers’ written and oral comments on manuscript drafts, the talk foregrounds how historians make choices, consider revising options, and engage the challenges of composing history.
