Gian Paolo Fagotto, tenor; Nathaniel Cox, cornetto; Victor Coelho, lute; David Dolata, theorbo and lute; This concert features Florentine songs, dances, and virtuoso instrumental works from the 16th and 17th centuries. Drawn from a range of Florentine sources, including songbooks used by courtly singers, the personal lute books of amateur Florentine musicians, vocal works based on poetry by Machiavelli, and Medici court music heard at the Palazzo Pitti and for Medici ceremonies, the program gives a panorama of courtly and domestic Florentine music from the period of Michelangelo (ca. 1530) to the Florentine “new” music of the early seventeenth century.
