For Admitted International Master’s Degree Students Preparing for Fall Study

Engineering challenges in the 21st century involve increasingly complex systems that require successful interaction and collaboration by teams of engineers that span diverse cultures and geography. Students equipped with skills to actively engage in team-based projects, to lead peers or to bridge interdisciplinary efforts are highly sought as employees in the global engineering marketplace. The College of Engineering at Boston University is committed to developing the skills for success both as graduate students and future employees. The only program of its kind, The Global Engineering Career Readiness Program is a customized, four-week summer immersion program designed to prepare international students for success in the Masters’ program and their future careers.

Students are immersed in American culture and language, and classroom and workplace norms equipping them to actively engage in team-based projects and lead peers. In addition, visits to local tech companies and conversations with engineering leaders help students to fine tune their career readiness skills. Global Engineering Career Readiness Program participants are set up for success as they enter their graduate program and position themselves for employment in the global workplace.

Follow Us on Chinese Social Media

We’re opening new doors to communicating with international students via social media. First in our expanding global network are two Chinese-language channels, Weibo and WeChat. We encourage Chinese-speaking applicants to follow BU on Weibo and subscribe to the BU WeChat channel ID bostonuniversity.

The Summer 2017 program runs from July 24 – August 18, 2017.

After check-in, welcome, and an orientation on the first Monday of the program, classes run 9:00 – 12:00 Monday through Friday, and 1:30 – 4:00 on Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday, a total of 20 hours of instruction per week.

In addition to the class schedule, a program of social and cultural activities is also offered.

US Graduate Study Communication Skills Jump Start (morning classes)

Learn essential communication, social and cultural skills that you can put right to work in your BU engineering classes. Students will learn about the expectations of the American classroom and refine their English and academic communication skills by working in pairs and groups. Engineering faculty will provide a preview of the active-learning classroom and their expectations of successful student participation. Students are given the opportunity to improve their overall comfort and confidence functioning in both spoken and written English, as well as an understanding of U.S. society and academic culture.

Students work on the following skills:

  • Participating in academic seminars and discussions
  • Working in groups/collaboration
  • Understanding academic lectures
  • Taking notes from readings and lectures
  • Developing research skills
  • Writing academic English
  • Reading academic texts
  • Improving oral presentation skills
  • Using academic vocabulary and the specialized terminology from the field of engineering
  • Writing research papers and appropriately documenting sources

Classes are interactive, and require active participation from the students. Students work individually, in pairs, and in groups to complete tasks and projects.

Skills for Successful Graduate Studies (afternoon classes)

This course prepares students to be successful as graduate students at Boston University by familiarizing them with the graduate student experience and campus resources. Through lecture format, group and pair work, class discussion, and class outings, students are oriented to the following areas of graduate student life.

  • The university libraries: purpose, structure, and use
  • Writing assistance at the Educational Resources Center
  • Getting to know student services: medical, counseling, and social
  • Using Blackboard

Written and Verbal Communication with Faculty and Staff

  • Making the most of office hours
  • Dealing with professors’ varying education and interaction styles
  • Effective email communication
  • How to work with your faculty advisor

Cultural and Classroom Norms and Behavior Expectations

  • What’s different about the western model of education?
  • The importance and practice of critical thinking
  • Classroom participation, group discussions and presentations and how they affect your grade
  • Class attendance and why it matters
  • Making effective use of the syllabus
  • Completing assignments – thoroughly and on time
  • Understanding assignment types: reading, research papers, group projects, and presentations
  • Examinations: pop quizzes, midterms and finals
  • Understanding and avoiding plagiarism

Getting Involved in the Boston University Community

  • Participating in extracurricular activities
  • Connecting with a religious community (if applicable)

Laying the groundwork to become a strong applicant for employment

  • Building your resume through campus and community involvement
  • Seeking out American friends
  • Studying English independently

Throughout the program, activities and trips give students real-life interactions with professionals in the field, and may include the following:

  • Visit to a local tech company
  • Informational interviews conducted by conference call with working engineers
  • Preparing and practicing “elevator pitches” and other networking skills
  • Guest lectures / Question & Answer sessions with professional engineers, engineering faculty and/or students
  • Information session with a BU research librarian
  • Tour of the BU College of Engineering

Program costs per student are as follows:

Tuition (4 wks. 20hrs/wk): $2,750

Optional Housing for four weeks* (July 23 – August 19): $1665
– includes double-occupancy BU dormitory room

Summer Program Scholarship: A limited number of scholarships of up to 50% of the program fee are available to admitted students who register for the Global Engineering Career Readiness Program by the early registration deadline of April 15, 2017.
