Class Notes
John V. Bianco, formerly of Testa, Hurwitz & Thibeault, joined Ropes & Gray LLP in Boston as a partner in the top-ranked Intellectual Property Group. His practice focuses on advising clients with regard to all aspects of intellectual property law, including issues pertaining to patents, trademarks, copyrights, and intellectual property licenses and litigations.
“We are delighted to welcome John to Ropes & Gray,” said Edward G. Black, partner and head of the firm’s Intellectual Property and Technology Practice. “His experience advising clients, particularly early stage and start-up technology companies, in the creation, development, and protection of patent and trademark portfolios, both in the United States and abroad, will strengthen the level of service we provide to clients.”
As part of his practice, John performs patent and trademark prosecution and conducts patent and trademark validity, infringement and clearance studies. He also advises clients regarding licensing and other technology transfer issues. John performs intellectual property portfolio due diligence analyses and counsels venture investors as to the advisability of investing in such portfolios. His industry sector expertise includes the fields of electrical, computer, software and mechanical engineering, optics, bioinformatics, medical devices and business methods.
A graduate of Boston University (B.S.E.E., 1984) and Northeastern University (J.D., 1991), John is admitted to the bar in Massachusetts (1991), U.S. District Court, District of Massachusetts (1992) and is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (1993). |

1980s
Gerald Backus (ENG’86) and his wife Debbie (Hoffman) Backus (SAR’86) of Washington Township, NJ, announced the arrival of their third child, Patricia Jane Backus.

Greg Semeraro (ENG’88) of Rochester, NY, writes that having spent 12 years as an engineer, in 2000 he decided that teaching as an Adjunct Professor (which he had been doing since graduating from BU) was not enough so he quit his job to go back to school full time. He graduated with his Ph.D. in October 2003 from the University of Rochester and has been working as an Assistant Professor of Computer Engineering at Rochester Institute of Technology since March 2003. “I couldn’t be having a better time,” he writes. “I’d love to hear from friends and classmates.” E-mail Greg at gpseec@ce.rit.edu.
Frank DeLucia, Jr. (ENG’89) of Greenwich, CT, has been elected a partner of the midtown New York intellectual property law firm Fitzpatrick, Cella, Harper & Scinto, effective January 1, 2004. The former BU Electrical Engineering major received his J.D. from Quinnipiac College School of Law in 1995 and now specializes in patent preparation and prosecution in the electrical and software arts. He also provides litigation support and counsels clients with regard to licensing agreements, trademark issues and other intellectual property matters.

Dr. Jay Penafiel (ENG’90) of Crownsville, MD, sends his best regards to his classmates in biomedical engineering Class of 1990. He is a cardiologist practicing at the Heart Center of Northern Anne Arundel County in Glen Burnie, MD. He specializes in Nuclear Cardiology and Transesophageal Echocardiography. He is also an Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He is married and has a 2-year-old daughter Isabella.
David S. Wang (ENG’92, ‘94) of Newark, CA, has temporarily put his engineering career on hold. In March 2003, at the end of a year-long “business trip” working for Sony in England, David turned down a promotion/transfer in order to return home and start a new business in California. Daniel S. Hagg (ENG’ 95) of Portland, OR, and his wife Jennifer Watters announce the birth of a daughter, Annalisa Simone Hagg. She was born healthy and happy October 28, 2003. He is currently a fellow in Critical Care Medicine at Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) after finishing a residency in Internal Medicine. Annalisa is a resident in General Surgery. Adnan Hamid (Dhermajwala) (ENG’97) of West Hills, CA writes that “I am happily married with now TWO kids. My son, Hatim, was born last August. My daughter, Umaima, is now two and a handful. Rochelle Dacko Rucinski (ENG’98) and David Rucinski (CAS’98), of Henderson, NV, welcomed their son Thomas David Rucinski into their lives on March 24, 2003. David is employed as a Manager of Information Technology at a local law firm Kamer, Zucker, and Abbott, and Rochelle works part-time as a Senior Quality Assurance Engineer at Bechtel SAIC Company. Thomas Fields (ENG’99) of Rockville Centre, NY, married Stefanie Botti on August 17 in Seaford, NY. Joseph Corneau (CAS’99) was a groomsman. Jill Anderson (ENG’03) of Jersey City, NJ, was given the Charles T. Main Student Section Award in November 2003. She was recognized by ASME International for her outstanding contribution to the Boston University Student Section and ASME’s New England region. During her career at BU, Jill served not only as treasurer and then president of the BU Student Section, but also as chair of the Student Section Committee (SSC) Membership Subcommittee, SSC representative to the Board on Pre-College Education, and New England region SSC junior representative. In November 2003, Jill was also awarded first place in the Old Guard Technical Presentation contest national finals in Washington, DC for her fifteen-minute presentation about Solar Powered Desalination using Parabolic Mirrors. The competition is designed to emphasize the value of excellent communication skills and is awarded to the individual who speaks most effectively on a topic relating to engineering. Jill is a management associate in Consolidated Edison Company of New York, Inc.’s GOLD (Growth Opportunities for Leadership Development) program and is currently SSC representative to the Early Career Committee.
