1960s

Jack Carney '62 retired in 2000 from Pratt & Whitney after 38 years and from the USAF Reserve as a Colonel after 28 years. Jack's career at Pratt & Whitney included positions in engineering, flight test (as an engineering test pilot), program management, and marketing, and throughout the 1990s he was vice president of commercial programs in Russia and central Europe. During his flight career, he checked out in more than 20 different types of commercial and military aircraft. The photo to the right is of Jack and his son, John, who is the place kicker for the New Orleans Saints and has been in the NFL for 15 years, previously with the San Diego Chargers. For six months of the year, Jack and his wife, Dorothy, reside in Narragansett, Rhode Island, and in Vero Beach, Florida, for the other six months. They enjoy boating, fishing, golfing, and traveling.

David Johnson '65 recently accepted employment with the Transportation Security Administration, a division of the Department of Transportation in Washington, DC. Prior to relocating to the nation's capital, Dave kept busy working on his farm in Maine. He is the proud breeder of an alpaca herd, which is currently residing on a separate farm in Palermo, Maine. Dave is pictured holding one of his alpaca, a three-week-old named Maximilian who will eventually weigh 150 to 175 pounds as an adult. In Memoriam
David E. Matson '62 died January 6, 2003, at his home in Acton, Massachusetts, after a struggle with Waldenstrom's Macroglobulinema. An aeronautical engineer major with a master's degree in business administration from the Boston University Graduate School of Management, Dave was an aviation enthusiast and extensive collector of World War II aviation memorabilia. He was the husband of Marguerite Matson who has established an endowed fund in David's name to support students in the Department of Aerospace and Manufacturing Engineering at the BU College of Engineering.
1970s

Dennis Shea '71, '73 of Dilbeek, Belgium, would like to read more news from ENG alumni who graduated in the early '70s. He hopes that his note will "start a movement." After graduation, Dennis spent 18 years in the United States with Ford and 10 years in Europe with FIAT, and now he is the director of European logistics and supply chain for Bridgestone Firestone in Brussels. "The expat experience has been excellent," he writes. "Both for my family and me, professionally and socially." Dennis's two children are multilingual and graduates of St. Andrews University in Scotland and Cambridge University. John M. Niedzwecki '73 of College Station, Texas, was recently appointed associate vice chancellor and executive associate dean of engineering at Texas A&M University. Niedzwecki, head of the university's department of civil engineering since 1998 and holder of the R.P. Gregory Chair in civil engineering, will oversee the faculty and academic activities of the Engineering Program.

Andrew Isaacs '81 of Parsippany, New Jersey, recently accepted the position of executive director, marketing, for the Medicines Company, a small pharmaceutical company with a new anticoagulant (Angiomax) to replace heparin. Brenda Bouffard Foster '83, '89 of Rollinsford, New Hampshire, recently left her manufacturing engineering job at Textron after 17 years to stay home with her three children: Mary, 10, Katherine, 6, and Christopher, 4. George Fenton '83 of Bel Air, Maryland, is a principal research scientist with Battelle Memorial Institute. He, his wife, Lisa, and their son, Graeme, recently moved from New Mexico to their new East Coast home. He writes, "I look forward to taking my son to his first BU hockey game this winter. Jordan Orlins '88 of New York, New York, writes that he is "somewhat ashamed that this is my first update since graduating more than 13 years ago." After graduating, Jordan went to Georgia Tech for an M.S. in aero engineering. He then spent nearly four years in the Air Force as a laser weapons researcher and executive officer. He left to attend Harvard Business School in 1994, where he met his wife, Gina, who works as an investment banker at Credit Suisse First Boston. Jordan began work at Bain & Company and specialized in merger-related work, left in late 1999, and now lives in New York City where he is the managing partner of a hedge fund, Patriot Capital Management LLC. Jeff Lincoln '88 of Jacksonville, Florida, writes, "I recently returned from deployment as a Navy officer-in-charge of an SH-60B helicopter detachment aboard the USS Anzio." Jacqueline Flanagan (Hafner) '92 of Mansfield, Massachusetts, has been a high school math teacher for seven years. In 2001, she achieved National Board certification in the area of mathematics. In October 1997, she married Tom Flanagan, to whom she was introduced by fellow ENG graduate, Stephanie Ogle. "Of course, Stephanie was in my wedding," she writes. Lt. Garrett Krause '94 of Virginia Beach, Virginia, has been busy the past two years. In February 2001, he married Sheree Welsh of Alexandria, Virginia. He then started his job as instructor pilot, training new Naval Aviators at the F-14 Fleet Replacement Squadron in Virginia Beach, where he has been ever since. The couple welcomed their first child, Kevin, into the world on January 2, 2003. The whole family is doing well and is looking forward to a new Navy assignment next December. Matthew Speer '94 of Oak Park, Illinois, went on to receive his master's in environmental engineering from Clemson University and worked as a consultant in the power industry. After five years of consulting, Matt decided to follow his passion and set up his own business. Matt designs and builds custom furniture "blending true craftsmanship with contemporary design to produce pieces that are aesthetically pleasing as well as functional." Jeffrey Atwood '95 and Nancy Li (CAS'95) of Orange, Connecticut, were married on April 13. George Mantis '95 of Ogden, Utah, recently completed his graduate studies at the Georgia Institute of Technology. In August, he received his Ph.D. in aerospace engineering. Ian Papautsky '95 received his Ph.D. in biomedical engineering from the University of Utah in the areas of BioMEMS and microfluidics. Patrick M. Tierney '95 of San Diego, California, graduated from the Executive MBA program at the UCLA Anderson School of Business this summer. He has shifted careers at Qualcomm, Inc., from a senior program manager of digital cinema development projects to a senior product/business development manager for CDMA test and deployment products.
