ENG adds two new M.S. Degrees

Graduate students at the College of Engineering can now earn an M.S. in Global Manufacturing or Photonics. The Global Manufacturing program allows qualified Boston University master's degree candidates to spend up to one year taking courses at Aachen University, Germany's leading school for manufacturing engineering, while pursuing industrial research at the renowned Fraunhofer Center for Manufacturing Innovation. This unique international program, combining the more theoretical approaches of the American academic system with the hands-on, practical approach of the German educational system, will create a new type of "international engineer" for an increasingly global economy. The Master of Science in Photonics program will be offered through the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and will have close ties to the Boston University Photonics Center. The program emphasizes an evolving interdisciplinary field of engineering and science that focuses on the use of light in telecommunications, manufacturing processes, materials research, medical sensing and imaging, and other industries. Graduates of the program will fill a critical need for industry specialists in this rapidly emerging area of technology.

First Alumni Symposium a Success

More than 25 ENG alums attended the first annual College of Engineering Alumni Symposium in November. Professor Sheryl Grace from the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering discussed aircraft noise simulation, Professor James Collins from the Department of Biomedical Engineering talked about Designer Gene Networks, Professor Malvin Teich of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering presented quantum cryptography, and Professor Thomas Bifano of the Department of Manufacturing Engineering discussed micromachines. The next alumni symposium is scheduled for November 2, 2002. For more information, please call us at 617-358-0608 or e-mail engalum@bu.edu.
