AN HONORED FACULTY

Fred Schubert, professor of electrical and computer engineering, will receive the Alexander von Humboldt Research Award in Bonn, Germany, this June. The award is given each year by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, a German organization that promotes international exchange among scientists. Schubert won the award for his sustained, original contributions to the development of compound semiconductor devices, including the invention of superlattice doping. The award includes an invitation to undertake extended periods of study at German research institutes.

Robin Cleveland, assistant professor of aerospace and mechanical engineering, received the R. Bruce Lindsay Award for 2000 from the Acoustical Society of America. The award recognizes his contributions to nonlinear acoustics in the area of shock waves used for lithotripsy. The R. Bruce Lindsay Award is presented each spring to a member of the society under the age of thirty-five who has contributed substantially, through published papers, to the advancement of theoretical or applied acoustics.

Jim Collins, biomedical engineering professor and co-director of the Center for Biodynamics, was named to Technology Review's TR 100, a group of 100 innovators under the age of thirty-five who exemplify the spirit of innovation in science, technology, and the arts. Collins develops and implements techniques and concepts from nonlinear dynamics and statistical physics in the study of physiological systems. Collins was also one of three ENG professors inducted into the College of Fellows of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), an honor reserved for the top scientists in the field. Collins was joined by Professors Evan Evans and Steven Colburn in being admitted to the 400-member college at the annual induction ceremony in Washington, D.C., on March 3. Five other ENG professors are also AIMBE fellows.
