Award-Winning Faculty

Professor Michael Howe of the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering received the Aeroacoustics Award of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics for "outstanding theoretical contributions to the understanding of the fundamental physical processes of noise generation in aeroacoustics." He also received the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Per Bruel Gold Medal for Noise Control and Acoustics for "important work on the interaction of fluid flow and structures, leading to an increased understanding of acoustic radiation generated from such interactions."

Jim Collins, biomedical engineering professor and co-director of the Center for BioDynamics, received the Engineers in Medicine and Biology Society Early Career Achievement Award. The award recognizes an individual who has made "significant contributions technologically or theoretically to the field of biomedical engineering within ten years of completion of his or her highest degree."

Charles R. Eddy, Jr., assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, was elected to the executive committee of the Electronic Materials and Processing Division of the American Vacuum Society, a nonprofit organization to advance the science and technology of vacuums, materials, surfaces, and plasmas, and providing a variety of educational opportunities and services.

Professor Emeritus Peter Buckeley, chair of the Department of Manufacturing Engineering from 1986 to 1996, was installed as the international president of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME), the leading professional society serving the manufacturing industries. Major focuses of his presidency will be increasing the visibility of careers in manufacturing engineering in U.S. high schools, better SME focus on services for its members, and improved SME outreach for lifelong learning.

New Faculty Join ENG

Eight new faculty members joined the College of Engineering this fall. Assad Oberai earned his Ph.D. from Stanford University, where he maintained a GPA of 4.0. Oberai, who joined the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering as a professor, is an expert in computational fluid dynamics, with interests in computational acoustics and fluid-structure interactions.

Martin Herbordt, who earned a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Massachusetts, joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering as an associate professor. Srikanth Gopalan, with a Ph.D. in materials science and engineering from the University of Utah, joined the Department of Manufacturing Engineering as an assistant professor. Jeff Hasty, who earned a Ph.D. in physics from the Georgia Institute of Technology, joined the Department of Biomedical Engineering as a research assistant professor. Michele Miller joined the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering as a visiting associate professor. On sabbatical from Michigan Technological University, where she was recently tenured, Miller earned her Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from North Carolina State University. Todd Murray, continued on page 12 continued from page 11 who earned his Ph.D. in materials science and engineering from Johns Hopkins University and is an expert in laser interactions with materials, joined the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering as an assistant professor. Saligrama Venkatesh joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering as an assistant professor. Venkatesh received his Ph.D. from MIT. Joining the Department of Manufacturing Engineering as a Fraunhofer assistant professor, Xin Zhang comes from MIT, where she held the position of research scientist for the Microsystems Technology Laboratory. Zhang earned her Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the Hong Kong Institute of Science and Technology.
