Björn M. Reinhard, Ph.D.

BIO

Being a native German, Björn got his diploma from the Technical University of Munich in 2000, where he studied the thermal stability of hydrated electrons. He then moved to the Technical University of Kaiserslautern in 2001 where he used different experimental and theoretical methods to investigate the reactivity of metal ions in nanosolutions. After receiving his Dr. rer. nat. in 2003, Björn moved to the University of California at Berkeley, where he worked together with Paul Alivisatos and Jan Liphardt to develop methods to optically measure picoNewton forces and dynamic moleculer rulers, capable of measuring distances on the 1-70 nm length scale. Björn's current research interest is the development of novel optical tools to quantify biological processes on the single molecule level and their application to fundamental life processes. Björn's awards include a Deutsche Forschungsgesellschaft research stipend (Germany), an Otto A.Wipprecht fellowship (Germany), and a Juan de la Cierva scholarship (Spain).
