So, you want to get a Master’s in Mechanical Engineering? Welcome to BU MechE Master’s Degree Programs! We deliver learning experiences that are thoughtfully designed and continually elevated to stay relevant and ahead of the ever-changing landscape of mechanical engineering. We invite all qualified applicants who are early career professionals, recent college graduates, and international students seeking advancement as technology leaders in the industry to explore BU MechE, our research areas, and our graduate degree programs. If you are considering an MA/PhD, you can also read more about our BU MechE PhD program.
We are thrilled to announce the addition of our newest degree,
Master of Science, Product Design & Manufacture
The mission of this new degree program is to cultivate modern engineers prepared to lead the Design to Manufacture (DTM) renaissance in the US and abroad. Modern academic thought acknowledges the intimate relationships between product design and manufacturing and generally treats the two subjects as intimately intertwined – Product design that fails to incorporate an understanding of high volume manufacturing can lead to failed product launches, costly reiterations, inefficient processes and high material costs.
The core courses for this program have been limited to four courses, a predetermined minimum required knowledge for all MS degree candidates in the field, thus permitting each student to customize their academic focus through a strong selection of approved electives in Product Design, Manufacturing, and Physical Sciences. Some of the exciting elective courses to choose from include: Technology Ventures, Lean and Agile New Product Development, Precision Machine Design, and MEMs: Fabrication and Materials.
As a graduate student you will have abundant opportunities to work with state of the art equipment in one of our impressive MechE Maker Spaces and to collaborate with our many MechE Affiliates. Our 15,000 square foot EPIC (Engineering Product Innovation Center) is a multi-million dollar makerspace located at the heart of BU’s Charles River campus and students can learn the skills necessary to design and build their own ideas, gain invaluable hands-on experience in design, prototyping, and small-scale manufacturing as an integral part of a strong overall engineering education.
Master’s Degree Programs
Our flexible degree program allows students to complete the degree in as little as one year of full-time coursework, or in up to two years if an internship or project-based experience is desired. BU MechE faculty come from successful careers in the industry and cutting-edge research, and firmly believe in the importance of an interdisciplinary and hands on education. As a master’s student, you will greatly benefit from our faculty’s rich experiences in, and beyond, the classrooms. Each student is assigned to a faculty advisor who takes an active interest in each student’s academic success and career pursuits
The available master’s degree programs are highly customizable to each individual’s interests and pursuits and there are flexible offerings such as Distance Learning and LEAP (Late Entry Accelerated Program) for those who may lack the required background in engineering. Hands-on Learning Experience
Our interdisciplinary specializations allow students the opportunity to gain important skills in some of the most rapidly growing sectors of technology, including Robotics, where there is high demand for engineers with these skills.
In addition to customizable program, our practicum requirement ensures that students are applying their knowledge to real-world projects, with an industrial partner, in project-intensive courses or through independent study. Master’s students can also complete an internship to gain practical work experience through our ‘Engineering with Practice” degree option and international students can use their CPT. The rich hands on experience prepares our students for a wealth of opportunities upon completing the program.
At Boston University, we have a dedicated Engineering Career Development Office to support our ENG students in the. The Career Office hosts two engineering career fairs each year, featuring both large and small companies, and numerous professional development events to help you find an internship or your dream job! Some of our mechanical engineering and manufacturing graduates have moved on to lucrative careers in companies, including Amazon, Adidas, Apple, Bose, Intel, GE, Google, GoPro, Medtronic, Nike, Philips, Raytheon, The Mathworks, and many more….
