Do you love to design and build things, and make them move? Do you enjoy collaborating with brilliant and passionate people? Do you dream of making a positive impact on society? Welcome to Boston University’s MechE Department where you may find your calling as a Mechanical Engineer!
It is an exciting time for the field of Mechanical Engineering. Driverless cars, 3D printing, precision agriculture, rockets, solar power – the list of evolving challenges and accomplishments to date is impressive. At BU MechE, we equip our students with the skills and hands-on experience that are increasingly relevant for solving society’s biggest problems – water quality, energy, aging infrastructure, and a graying population, among others.
When I first arrived at Boston University three years ago from Bell Labs, I found an extraordinary, diverse group of faculty who were passionate about education as well as cutting-edge research. Together, we have crafted an ambitious five-year strategic plan with the vision of pushing the boundaries of mechanical engineering and shaping the next generation of societal leaders. This is where you come in. We are constantly seeking out the brightest and most promising applicants for our prestigious and growing MechE program.
Our faculty are committed to innovating our undergraduate curriculum to improve your learning experience. To that end, we are piloting a “Community Preparedness” theme in Fall 2016 across four courses to bolster our efforts to nurture societal engineers. We will continue to emphasize hands-on experiences, both curricular and extracurricular, especially in our new Engineering Product Innovation Center (EPIC), which you must see!
At BU MechE, we are committed to delivering value in our rapidly expanding Master’s Degree program. From hiring Professors of the Practice with real-life industrial experience to increasing opportunities for practical experiences, we are continually updating our offerings. Furthermore, with the strong conviction that research strengthens teaching, our faculty is devoted to increasing the opportunities for PhD students, who receive a full stipend during their PhD program.
Because important advances are often made at the interface between traditional disciplines, we actively encourage a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment through seminars, shared labs, and social events. Faculty and students also enjoy free access to up-to-date fabrication facilities in the Photonics Center.
Boston is lauded as one of America’s top innovation hubs, and our students enjoy the vibrant energy of this beautiful walking city, which is also full of culture and history. I am sure you have heard of our cold winters, but a few added layers for warmth will do the trick, and the rough winter months are certainly offset by the beauty of the New England Spring, Summer, and Fall.
There are many exciting things happening at BU MechE and we invite you to be a part of it – you can apply here. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me. I hope you will consider joining us to launch or further your studies in Mechanical Engineering.
