The Job
Search - How to get started
Updated March 24, 2008
The CDO
Staff is ready to assist you in your professional development
and career
planning. We hope you take advantage of our services
and attend some of the
numerous events we have scheduled this year. For the
Freshmen and Engineering
Students that have not taken advantage of our services,
we encourage you to stop
by the office at your convienance. We are located
in the Engineering
Research
Building at 44 Cummington Street, Rm. 112
Every year the CDO Staff receives numerous e-mails from
students asking "How do
I start my job search"? Therefore, we felt it
was essential to provide the student
body with some guidelines to get you started. The
list is not all inclusive and the
sequence is not intended to hinder your ambition or curiosity.
Our intention is to
get you thinking about your career options and expose you
to the career resources
available at Boston University, The College of Engineering,
and the Career
Development Office, so you can achieve your personal and
professional goals.
Guidelines:
Notes:
All Permanent Placement & Co-op positions will get posted
to eRecruiting
as they
come in. You should be checking eRecruiting a few times
a week to keep abreast of
the current job postings.
The CDO uses the terms " Summer
Co-op" & "Summer Internship" interchangeably.
All jobs are paid positions and NO CREDIT is awarded.
> Check the
CDO Website Main Page
on a daily basis for announcements, updates
and routine communications. The CDO Staff will use
this page for the majority of
our communication with the Engineering Student Body.
This will positively cut down
on the number of e-mails you receive from the Career Development
Office. So, you
must be consistent in checking this page if you want
to stay informed.
> Make sure your profile and personal information is
current in eRecruiting.
> Recommend Co-op Candidates view the "Co-op Information
Seminar" and
recommend ALL Students view the "Resume Writing", "Interviewing",
& "Working a
Career Fair" Seminars.
The seminars are available on-line or you are welcome to
view the VHS versions in the Career Development Office.
> Create and/or
update your resume
and upload it to eRecruiting.
> Work up a
generic cover
letter in case a company requires one to be submitted
with your resume. You will modify it slightly for each company.
> Review the
participants
list for the current Career Fair. Research the companies
you're interested in working for. Also, you may find
the Career
Fair Achives helpful
in your job search. The archives lists the companies
that have attended our career
fairs over the past 5 years and lists the program/majors
they were looking to hire.
> Review the
Co-op Information,
Permanent
Placement, Graduate
Schools,
Research,
and International
Opportunities Pages of the CDO Website:
Select "Where
Engineering Graduates Work" to view a list of the companies
that
hired our seniors in the last 4 years, broken down by major,
with links to the
companies' websites. Select "Where
Co-op Students Work" to view a list of
companies that hired our Co-op students in the last 5 years.
Select "Graduate
Schools Attending" to view a list of graduate schools
our graduates have attended
in the last 4 years.
Research the companies and/or graduate schools. Check
out the job listings and
apply via the company website.
> Review the Events
Page of the CDO Website on a weekly basis.
> Companies post permanent placement and Co-op jobs to
eRecruiting all year long. However, the majority of
permanent placement postings come in the Fall. If you want
to be considered for an on-campus interview or if you want
to be considered for an interview with a company not participating
in our on-campus interviewing program, you should login
to eRecruiting and apply for the position(s) you are interested
in AND qualified to perform.
> Sign-up for an employer
mock interview (Fall & Spring). (Interview
Guide)
> "Take advantage of the CDO Website to assist in
your job search ".
> RSVP for
"Employer Power Hours". Power Hours are
small group meetings, 10-20
students with one company representative: Professional Engineer,
Recruiter, or HR
Staff Member. The topic is chosen by the company representative
and active
participation by students is highly encouraged. Food
and beverages provided by
the Career Development Office.
> Attend local
Career Fairs.
> Sign-up for an employer
resume polish (Fall & Spring).
> Attend the Fall Engineering Career Fairs (Fall &
Spring)
> Rountinely check the Career
Services Office Website for additional seminars,
career fairs and local events.
Please visit the Career Development Office for additional
information or assistance.
Sincerely,
Sarah
