College of Engineering Dean Kenneth R. Lutchen has announced the appointment of Associate Professor John White as chairman ad interim of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, effective Sept. 1.

White, who also holds a joint appointment in the Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics at the Medical School, has served as BME’s associate chair for undergraduate and graduate studies. He joined the faculty in 1994 as an assistant professor and was promoted to associate professor in 2000.

His appointment as chair ad interim comes a few weeks after Lutchen left the BME chairman’s office to assume deanship of the College of Engineering.

Uday Pal named MFG Chairman ad interim
By Chhavi Sachdev

College of Engineering Dean Kenneth R. Lutchen has announced the appointment of Professor Uday B. Pal as chairman ad interim of the Department of Manufacturing Engineering, effective October 1.

Pal’s appointment comes as Professor Thomas Bifano steps down as MFG chairman and takes the helm as director of the Photonics Center.

“Uday [has] an extraordinary record of accomplishment in materials science and engineering coupled to the manufacturing of materials for structural and new energy applications,” said Lutchen in announcing the appointment. “It is important that the department has an interim chair with a local, national and international pulse of how the current manufacturing curriculum and department relates to these areas.”

"Two Boston University biomedical engineers have won a major National Institutes of Health grant to continue groundbreaking research aimed at sequencing individual human genomes for about $1,000.

The NIH announced the winners of its National Human Genome Research Institute grants on Oct. 4. Boston University Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Physics Amit Meller was among nine researchers chosen for the “$1,000 Genome” award nationally, and received the second-largest grant. Meller and co-principal investigator Zhiping Weng, a BME associate professor, won $2.2 million over the next three years for their research, in addition to some $600,000 Meller has already received from NIH for this work.
