With Northeastern goaltender Keni Gibson out of position, Chris Bourque (CAS'08) took a loose puck and faced an open goal that seemed wider than a garage door. “I don't know where the goalie was, but he wasn't in the net,” says Bourque. “I just saw the puck sitting there and my eyes lit up.”

WORLD'S FASTEST OSCILLATING NANOMACHINE HOLDS PROMISE FOR TELECOMMUNICATIONS, QUANTUM COMPUTING

"Nanotechnology leapt into the realm of quantum mechanics this past winter when an antenna-like sliver of silicon one-tenth the width of a human hair oscillated in a lab in a Boston University basement. With two sets of protrusions, much like the teeth from a two-sided comb or the paddles from a rowing shell, the antenna not only exhibits the first quantum nanomechanical motion but is also the world's fastest moving nanostructure. "

A team of Boston University physicists led by Assistant Professor Pritiraj Mohanty developed the nanomechanical oscillator.

Saturn's Aurora Defy Scientists' Expectations

Feb. 16, 2005 BU Press Release

Aurora on Saturn behave in ways different from how scientists have thought possible for the last 25 years, according to new research by a team of astronomers led by John Clarke, a professor in BU's Department of Astronomy and in the department's Center for Space Physics. The team's findings have overturned theories about how Saturn's magnetosphere behaves and how its aurora are generated. Their results will be published in the February 17 issue of Nature .

Miniature Magnometers

by Joan Schwartz, BU Bridge, 2/18/05

Joshua Semeter (ENG '92, '97), an ENG assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, and Makhlouf Redjdal , an electrical and computer engineering research associate, are developing a new magnetometer, small and light enough to fly easily in space and sensitive enough to compete with the much bulkier fluxgate magnetometers that are the current industry standard

Assessing Tiny Building Blocks

by Joan Schwartz, BU Bridge, 2/18/05

First discovered in 1991, carbon nanotubes have become one of the most important building blocks of nanotechnology. Combining the strength of diamonds with the conductivity of graphite, carbon nanotubes can be envisioned as a sheet of graphite (a lattice of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal pattern) rolled into an incredibly thin cylinder one 30-thousandth the diameter of a human hair.

Anna Swan , an ENG research assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, is developing new methods to measure the optical and electronic properties of individual nanotubes.

3-D Without the Glasses

by Joan Schwartz, BU Bridge, 2/4/05

CT scans, MRIs, and ultrasound images have transformed medicine, producing high-quality, detailed pictures that allow physicians to see inside the body to diagnose problems and guide surgery and other medical interventions. Although the data gathered is three-dimensional, current technologies produce only two-dimensional images.

Janusz Konrad , an ENG associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, is working on a new technology to allow doctors to see lifelike full-color, three-dimensional images derived from data from current medical imaging technologies. Called automultiscopic display, the technology combines sophisticated data processing with enhanced hardware.

Also involved are Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering Professor Pierre Dupont and Biomedical Engineering Professor David Mountain, and the BU Scientific Computing and Visualization Group.

Perfect Interview

New Career Development software package helps with interview prep

The Office of Career Development recently acquired a new addition called Perfect Interview.

Perfect Interview is an innovative multimedia software package complete with over 1,500 interview questions, answers, and hints, which have all been professionally produced on digital video.  After logging on, the user specifies the type and length of interview that he or she wants to practice.  Specific question categories can also be selected.  The interview begins and the questions appear on the computer screen in full-motion video and sound.  The user must answer on the spot, just like in a real interview.

A digital video webcam automatically records and plays back the user's response, providing immediate feedback of how he or she might appear to a prospective employer.
