Auburndale,
MA
The
College of Engineering is gearing up for its
5th Annual Excellence in Engineering Golf Classic
and Fundraiser and you are invited!
Join
fellow alumni and friends of the College of
Engineering for 18 holes at the beautiful Woodland
Golf Club in Auburndale, MA. Don't want to golf
because you've got problems with your swing?
That's okay! There will be a free workshop with
the resident golf pro where you can get tips
to improve your game.
Don't
golf at all? Perhaps you'd like to join us for
tennis instead. Or, if you'd like, you can attend
as a non-golfer and join us for dinner and our
silent auction!
The
tournament's proceeds will benefit the Excellence
in Engineering Fund, which is used to directly
support students through scholarships and summer
fellowships, book awards, and lends support
to student professional organizations to hold
panels and attend conferences, competitions
and seminars.
Sponsorship
Opportunities are available.
Can't
make it on the 25th? Please consider supporting
the College through a sponsorship or auction
item donation.

Patrick
Foley (ENG' 91, '94) and Kerry
Corrigan Foley (ENG '91)
are recognized for their tireless effort
at helping bring last year's BME Alumni Gala
to fruition. The event would not have been
nearly as successful without their enthusiasm
and dedication.
Both Patrick and Kerry
earned their degrees in Biomedical Engineering.
They serve on the BME Alumni Board, are regularly
involved with ENG and BME functions, and are
inaugural members of the College of Engineering's

a life-long battle with Kearns-Sayre disease.
A well known entrepreneur in the telecommunications
field, Chris co-founded Equipe Corporation
and served as Vice President of Engineering.
Chris was also Director of Engineering at
Ascend Communications, which was eventually
purchased by Lucent technologies, and an employee

| Dean
ad interim Solomon Eisenberg exits the
2006 ENG commencement ceremony on a Segway
to the theme from Star Wars. |
Despite
the weather, College of Engineering graduates
were in good spirits as they gathered at the
Track and Tennis Center to receive their diplomas
on Sunday, May 14th.
2006
commencement speaker was Dean Kamen, president
of DEKA Research & Development Corporation,
holds hundreds of patents for medical devices
and is perhaps best known as inventor of the
Segway personal transportation vehicle. He urged
graduates to use their education to improve
the lives of people around the world.
"We
need to be able to compete by having the best.
It's not a birthright.
Every generation has to earn it. If you don't,
you'll be looking at the world from a different
perspective. Whether you know it or not, and
most of our culture doesn't know it, this country
and this world is counting on you. These are
exciting times.”
Following
the awarding of the diplomas, Dean Eisenberg
and Dr. Kamen made a spectacular exit to the
theme from Star Wars aboard two waiting Segways.

Graduate
Programs Jump Into
US
News' Top 50
The
College of Engineering has risen in the ranks.
U.S. News & World Report has rated the College's
graduate programs at 42nd in the nation — a
jump of 10 places over last year's ranking.
The annual
report, “America's Best Graduate Schools 2007,”
also ranked the College for the strength of
its specializations. The Department of Biomedical
Engineering moved out of a tie with MIT into
seventh place alone, its third consecutive year
in the top 10.
“The
College of Engineering has been working to steadily
improve the educational experience of its students
and the quality of its research and faculty,
and this jump in the ranking validates these
efforts,” said Solomon R. Eisenberg, dean ad
interim of the College. “The quality of
our graduate students has been rising and external
funding that supports our faculty's research
is at record levels. This most recent ranking
is evidence that we are on the right track.”
Other
departments earned recognition, as well: In
computer engineering, the College tied with
Dartmouth at 52nd place; it ranked 51st for
electrical/electronics engineering, as well
as mechanical engineering.
“While
we don't place too much emphasis on the US News
rankings, they are nonetheless used by prospective
students when deciding which university to attend,”
said Eisenberg.
“Breaking
into the top 50 is especially welcome because
the printed edition of this ranking sold on
newsstands includes only the top 50 schools.”
Last
year, the College's graduate programs ranked
52nd in the survey. Boston University now joins
Harvard and MIT as the only Massachusetts engineering
programs in the US News top 50.

Senior
project “SmarTrash” heads to world finals
By
Chhavi Sachdev & Mike Seele
Imagine
“smart” trash cans in public parks that tell
employees when they need to be emptied — and
when they don't. The undergraduates in the Boston
University College of Engineering who imagined
and prototyped this concept have just made the
finals of the 7th annual Computer Society International
Design Competition (CSIDC).
 |
Kalman Zabarsky, BU Photo Services |
Students
Yaniv Ophir, Joseph D'Errico, Andrew Hagedorn
and Vyas Venkataraman will compete against teams
from China, Jordan, India, Poland and Romania.
Only two other teams from the U.S. will be at
the finals on July 2, in Washington D.C.
The
competition is aimed at encouraging computer-based
answers to real-world problems through innovation.
The
team, also known as Team X, surveyed park authorities
nationwide to determine potential interest in
a “smart” trash can that could tell park managers
whether or not it needs to be emptied. They
learned that the annual cost of trash collection
in a typical public park ranges well into six
figures and that interest in their idea was
high.
The
students devised SmarTrash, a system that rigs
a trash can lid with a planar sensor, an infrared
depth sensor and a small wireless device, or
mote, which communicates with a base station
through a mesh network. The whole system is
solar powered.

ENG
Outreach
Part
of the College of Engineering's mission is to
encourage a younger generation of interested
students to pursue a future in engineering.
To this end, the College hosts many competitions
throughout the year.
In
the past few months, the College has hosted
the FIRST Robotics Competition, the Junior Science
and Humanities Symposium (JSHS), and the 2006
Annual Design Competition.
FIRST
Robotics Competition
FIRST
(For Inspiration and Recognition of Science
and Technology) Robotics is an annual competition
that provides high school students with a hands-on
engineering experience by teaming up with adult
mentors, such as engineering students, to solve
an engineering design problem in an intense
and competitive way.

Junior
Science and Humanitites Symposium
April
1, 2006
The
Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS)
is an annual event that provides high school
students who have done original research in
the sciences, mathematics, or engineering an
opportunity to present what they have done to
an audience of other students, high school teachers,
and professional scientists. The Symposium also
provides and opportunity for students to win
scholarships as well as to participate in the
National JSHS.
 |
| JSHS
Competition, Poster presentation, April
1, 2006. Students could also compete in
an oral presentation competition. |
2006 Design Competition
Each
year, the College of Engineering hosts a design
competition open to high school freshmen, sophomores
and juniors.
This
year, 67 teams of 126 students from 32 New England
schools competed for the prizes, some of which
included tuition scholarships to BU after graduation.
 |
| First
place winners Andrew McGlathery and James
Gaewsky, freshmen at Reading High School
in Massachusetts, won the biggest trophies
as well as tuition scholarships to Boston
University of $5,000 per year for four
years. |
