Call for Nominations!

Each year, during Reunion Weekend, the College of Engineering presents alumni whose accomplishments have set them apart with the Distinguished Alumni Award.

This year's ENG Awards will be presented in conjuction with the College's Awards ceremony on Saturday, May 19th.

Past honorees have represented the broadest array of talent and experience and we hope to continue this tradition of quality in 2007. We need your help in identifying alumni (even yourself) who have made outstanding contributions in the following three categories:

Service to Profession

Honors an alumnus/a whose work has significantly contributed to the advancement of their profession and brought them recognition within their field. Involvement in engineering societies, as long as they are active members who have made a significant contribution to the field, counts as service to the profession.

Service to Community

Honors an alumnus/a who, whether through volunteer service or paid work, has made exceptional contributions to the betterment of their community or the circumstances of a group of people.

Service to Alma Mater

Honors an alumnus/a who has enhanced the stature of the College of Engineering through their voluntary association with the University.

WISE Symposium Mulls Report on Women in Science and Engineering

By Chhavi Sachdev

Provost of the Medical School, Karen Antman, University of Washington's Eve Riskin, University Provost David Campbell and NRL's Debra Rolinson at the WISE panel discussion

On the heels of a report released by the National Academies on barriers and

biases against women scientists and engineers in academia, Boston University’s Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) held a symposium, “Transforming the Culture of Academic Science and Engineering” on Nov. 13.

According to the report, though more and more women are matriculating in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, very few are moving into academia after graduation — a trend that the National Academies have noted and investigated.

Forty years ago, only 3 percent of America’s scientists and technicians were women. In 2003, that number was closer to 20 percent. Still, the number of women is much lower than that of men and governmental reports and congressional committees have noted it of significance for both the economy of the nation as well as its national security.

At the College of Engineering, women make up 13 percent of the faculty, said Dean of Administration Richard Lally. In the last five years, seven out of 41 new hires were women, as compared to two hires out of 28 in the five-year period before that.

Turning Medical Research into Reality

BU and German firm commit $5 million to get devices from drawing board to market

By Chris Berdik

Venture capitalist panel will help decide which research the alliance will support.

Venture capitalist panel will help

decide which research the alliance will support.

“University research only gets you to a certain point,” says Andre Sharon, a College of Engineering professor of manufacturing engineering, “because universities generally don’t have the infrastructure to turn that research into real, working machines on the factory floor or in patient rooms in hospitals.”

In recent years, Boston University has been working to address this need, known as “translational research,” the specialized manufacturing, engineering, and business know-how that every high-tech innovation needs to go from bright idea to commercialized product. In January it will launch another major initiative to speed innovation to market: an alliance with the German R&D nonprofit, Fraunhofer Gesellschaft.

NEW ENG DEVELOPMENT OFFICER

Jackie Iaconelli joins College of Engineering

Jackie Iaconelli, ENG Development Officer

Early in December, Jackie Iaconelli joined the College as the Office of Development & Alumni Relations' new Development Officer.

Jackie received her degree in business management from SMG in 2000. After graduation she began working in the central BU Development and Alumni Relations Office. She was promoted from program coordinator to Regional and then Senior Regional Manager, where her responsibilities included managing volunteers and planning events for alumni who live in the New England, Mid Atlantic, Midwest and the Southern parts of the country.

By all accounts Jackie has both cultivated the relationships with many different alumni living in various cities while also building and/or enhancing the regional alumni boards around the nation -- now she brings this expertise to the College of Engineering.
