Materials Science & Engineering Division
Division Links
The Division of Materials Science & Engineering brings together researchers from all three of BU’s engineering departments, the College of Arts & Sciences and BU’s medical campus to collaborate on materials-related research. The division includes more than 25 participating faculty members who teach and advise our graduate students and serve on the division’s committees, as well as numerous affiliated faculty who have a professional interest in materials-related activities.
Research
Our interdisciplinary research addresses challenges in health care, energy, information technology and homeland security. It has significant research funding from government and industry sources and is driving innovations in four key areas:
- Biomaterials
- Electronic and photonic materials
- Materials for energy and environment
- Nanomaterials
History
The Division of Materials Science & Engineering was established in 2008 to leverage BU’s materials-related research and teaching strengths in the College of Engineering, College of Arts & Sciences and Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine. The division and our graduate programs were designed to remove barriers between departments and allow the BU materials community to collaborate and pursue interdisciplinary materials research on a larger scale.
