Title: Searching for Axion Dark Matter with Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Presenter: Deniz Aybas Date: Friday, December 8, 2017 Time: 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM Location: PRB 595 (Physics Research Building), 3 Cummington Mall Advisor/Chair: Alex Sushkov (Physics, ECE) Committee: Anna Swan (ECE, Physics, MSE), Siddharth Ramachandran (ECE, MSE) Abstract: The nature of dark matter is an open question in fundamental physics. One of the candidates for dark matter is a particle called axion. This work constitutes the design and development of a laboratory scale experiment that aims to search for the axion and axion-like-particles beyond the current astrophysical limits. The Cosmic Axion Spin Precession Experiment (CASPEr) searches for nuclear spin precession in an axion field using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and precision magnetometry techniques. We have been building CASPEr at Boston University for the last two years and plan on running Phase 1 during the winter of 2018 and phase 2 during the fall of 2018.
