Professor Irving Bigio (ECE, BME, Physics, Medicine) was awarded the Joseph W. Goodman Book Writing Award for his textbook entitled Quantitative Biomedical Optics: Theory, Methods, and Applications (Cambridge University Press, 2016), which he co-authored with Professor Sergio Fantini of Tufts University. The award, bestowed jointly by the Optical Society of America (OSA) and the SPIE, recognizes influential optics and photonics books that are significant to teaching, business, industry, or research.

This textbook serves to teach courses and can be used as a reference for a wide range of areas in biomedical optics, from spectroscopic techniques, to imaging methods and, finally, laser-tissue interactions. The topics are explained using physical science principles and are accompanied by theoretical treatments and the mathematical formalisms. The textbook also provides exercise problems, suggests additional sources, and offers descriptions of biomedical applications and instrumentation.

“It does feel good to be recognized for the results of an effort that occupied several years of my and Sergio’s lives. The real reward is that our textbook has been adopted by a growing number of educators around the world, who are teaching courses in biomedical optics,” commented Bigio.

Bigio has earned several honors and awards throughout his career. He is a Fellow of the OSA, the SPIE, and the American Institute for Medical & Biological Engineering.
