Position Announcement: Full-time Research Technician

in ME Spotlight Faculty, Spotlight Research

FT Research Tech

The Research Technician’s primary responsibility is to manage a core facility focused on micro-computed tomography (“microCT”) imaging. The MicroCT Imaging Core services multiple projects led by researchers at Boston University, Boston University School of Medicine, and other institutions and research entities, typically in the greater Boston area. The Technician will work with the Facility Director, Professor Elise Morgan, to maintain the facility, to manage the facility’s workflow, and to provide technical consultation and assistance to the individual users.

An additional, though more minor, component to the Research Technician’s job will be to assist with ongoing projects in the research laboratory led by Dr. Morgan. This laboratory, the Orthopaedic and Developmental Biomechanics Laboratory, has an active research program in biomechanics that includes investigations of genetic and mechanical influences on skeletal repair and regeneration, and studies of structure-function relationships in skeletal tissues and whole organs. The laboratory consists of approximately 1100 square feet and is fully equipped with materials testing systems, wet chemistry benches, tissue processing and imaging facilities, and computational facilities. The laboratory staff come from a wide range of disciplines in engineering and life sciences. The laboratory is housed in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

The position requires 40 hours per week. Scheduling of these hours is flexible, though the majority are expected to fall within traditional business hours.

Specific responsibilities of the research technician include:

  • performing micro-computed tomography scans and image analysis
  • maintaining the facility’s equipment
  • performing back-ups and archiving of the image data
  • ordering supplies for the facility
  • training new users on the facility’s equipment
  • providing technical consultation on use of the facility’s equipment
  • carrying out data reduction and statistical analyses
  • maintaining complete records of his/her work
  • assisting the Facility Director with communicating and enforcing the facility’s policies

  • Previous laboratory experience in science and/or engineering is required.
  • A Bachelor’s degree is required, and it is highly desirable that the degree be in an engineering- or science-related field.
  • Excellent communication skills are required.

Salary:  TBD, based on the applicant’s experience
