It is estimated that 1.2 million industrial robots will be incorporated to the workforce by 2013. This would be mean one robot for every 5,000 people which most likely will translate into job losses for humans.

There are certain jobs that are better handled by robots than humans. “With applications which involve repetition on the same set of actions, assembly which is very well defined, I see no reason to waste a person when you could put a machine there. It’s much faster and cheaper,” said Professor Belta.

Belta’s research focuses on making totally autonomous robots. He said humans will remain irreplaceable until a robot is created that can really think for itself.

“The robots should be able to be smarter in the sense that they should make decisions. If it doesn’t know what’s going to happen, it has to be smart enough to figure out what to do by itself without the help of a human.”
