Prof. John Fernandez will describe the multi-faceted work of the urban metabolism research group at MIT. The effort balances the need for analysis of resource consumption in the urban space coupled with an understanding of urban system and infrastructure linkages. These efforts contribute to improved metrics defining urban resource efficiency and provide pathways for the development of appropriate and effective sustainable technologies. Fernandez will describe ongoing work in the analysis of neighborhood energy and material intensity, a global city typology, resource modeling using system dynamics and the investigation of the resource consequences of urban development and infrastructure expansion policies.
