Spencer Whitfield Open Space Project

Codman Square Neighborhood Development Corporation (CSNDC) and Trust for Public Land (TPL) are working with students from Boston University’s City Planning and Urban Affairs to develop a planning process that will lead to an innovative use of the Spencer Whitfield site in Codman Square.

The Spencer Whitfield site has been part of a 15-year community effort to develop two playgrounds in Codman Square.  For a host of reasons, this site could not be transformed into a usable space.   The community, however,  views the site as a potential playground location and has included it in a list of parcels for the area that will become the Fairmount Greenway.  The Fairmount Greenway is a multi-stakeholder effort geared towards transforming the neighborhoods along the Fairmount Commuter Rail Line into one unified, green community.  The project includes the Roxbury, Dorchester, Mattapan and Hyde Park neighborhoods.
